Demo: Team Photoshoot

How we would set up our team photos, we always do team first for team and individual stuff. So what we would do before we would even start is I would say we're gonna line up all the people shortest to tallest, because we don't do anything before we do the team and that's because once I start photographing the team, I know that everyone's there. Then I don't have to get stuff waiting in limbo for people that are coming or not coming. So let's um, I'm gonna start showing some people this so I'm gonna have you guys line up for me. We'll do shortest person, tallest person. Doesn't need to be perfect just get close. Awesome, awesome, awesome, so we've got two, four, six, eight people, now remember we have that posing sheet that gives you all of the numbers for this, uh, eight is two, three, two, so we're gonna do three rows, two in the front, three in the middle, two in the back, okay? So, come on over I'm gonna take the first two. So I'm actually gonna pose this in a weird... I'm gonna get...

rid of this camera, is this like in the way, I feel like this is.. Awkward. Alright, so I'm gonna pose this actually with them facing the wall at first just so we can show you guys better exactly what it would look like as a photographer so face the wall and we're gonna have you go criss-cross applesauce. Perfect, I'm gonna have you scoot back just a little bit. I have marked right there, perfect, I put a piece of tape on the ground that's where all my teams, this is right where we're metered in for the lights, this is where they're gonna start. So these two are gonna go there, and we go knees touching, oh you guys are awesome. Tall back, tall backs, alright hands on your knees, perfect, alright so now I'll take the next three. Alright now remember what we talked about with posing, we don't just go shortest to tallest, we want it to go like this, not boom boom boom. So I'm gonna bring you right here and I'm gonna have you go both knees down right there. Can you go tall off your butt and go forward, forward, forward, alright, cool, you're gonna come right over here, I want your head right on this side here, awesome. Tall off your butt and then you're gonna go right down there, go forward, forward, forward, cool. Go forward just a little bit more. Okay, so this is the right setup because what we've done is we've left enough room in between both of these guys to fill in another person. Oh, I messed it up it's supposed to be three, two, three. No problem, so I'm gonna have you go criss-cross applesauce right there. You're gonna slide one spot over. Cool, alright so come on in we're gonna take it from the back so the tallest guys first. You can come right here walk right into this space. Now what I'm gonna have you do is stand right here I want one foot in between her legs. And you're gonna go forward, and you're gonna come right here one foot in between his legs. So that's how it should look as you're setting it up. Okay, you're just gonna relax, now it just feels ridiculous. (laughter) Alright, relax, standup we're gonna turn around and show them how we would do that from this side so everybody stand up, jump up. So it's simple easy posing but you'll see what we did was we setup the windows exactly the way they needed to be so we could say everyone's face, and we kind of pulled people in, I always say it should be like uncomfortably close to the next row. So let's do that front row again so we're gonna have you guys come on over right here. Meg, you're gonna be my middle, criss-cross applesauce perfect. Feet in like that, cool, I'm gonna bring you guys down right here. Awesome, and then come forward just a little bit. Alright, so we always go front row hands on your knees, everyone else hands go behind our backs, bring it tall, tall, tall, okay, now these are not kids, so I don't have to use some of my jokes and my ridiculous stuff that I would with kids, but um, what we would typically do right here... And I would just do a... Okay, lighting looks good, we've got junk in our background though I'm gonna move this light out of there. (laughter) So, coming right back, we'll boom right here awesome. One more big cheesy smiles, hold it I love it. Now, for getting kids to smile, I'm going to pretend like you guys are five-year-olds, okay, so this is going to be.. (laughter) This is really how we have to do it for kids, it's super important to keep the energy level extremely high and you have to do it in a way that we're getting the kids excited to have their pictures, but you also don't wanna go and make it super cheesy fun, because they start laying back and doing ridiculous silly stuff. So what we will generally do with kids is we go alright everybody right here! And because I'm on a tripod I got my focus locked in I know I don't even need to look through the camera. Alright everybody look right here! Everybody look at me say yes! Yes! Say yippee! Yippee! Awesome right here yeah I love it thanks guys! And that's how I would shoot a group of five-year-olds (laughter) So, just little things like that, we aren't gonna have them say cheese, we aren't gonna say anything like that but we are just going to get them excited about it, because pictures should be fun, and that comes through in the images, and we also shot a bunch so we know that we got good expressions on them. Team photos are the one thing, we don't advertise this but I will do head swaps on team photos. So, if I have- oh you guys can realax that sucks on the knees I'm sorry. (laughter) So, I will do head swaps I will pull stuff out and move it around to get a perfect team photo because if you don't have one with everyone's eyes open if you don't have one with kids with everyone looking at the camera it's not a good photo. And so, by shooting on a tripod, consistent exposure, consistent posing, everything's, bum bum bum bum bum, the head swaps are generally pretty easy, and we only have to do those if it's really young kids.

Fantastic class! Matthew is not only a great teacher who easily gets his ideas and thoughts across but he's fun, funny and engaging. I keep coming back to watch again, and again.

I've watched Matthew before, on Creative Live, and in person. He never fails to entertain and his knowledge is great. This class on high volume sports photography is the best one I've watched. I'm trying to break into this are of business, and he does a great job of breaking down each area. He is a great public speaker, and does a great job explaining what I need to know.

I cannot full express my gratitude for this class. I have done T & I work before but just little aspects of it have evaded me.this class so far has been extremely helpful and it isn't even over yet. Thank you for not just being open, but being kind. Making it a point to say to "Play by the rules" and to emphasize "Run an ethical business" is refreshing. Don't Be Valdemort! ha ha.
