Finding the Pieces to Your Career

Say all the time like we're trying to find the pieces of our career puzzle and eventually when we have enough pieces, they obviously won't make like, a literal picture. But we're going to be able to kind of see them so that we could back away and when we have enough pieces, we could back away and say, oh, this is what my career pieces make. This is what it's telling me so for you guys here in studio audience, we actually have puzzle pieces for each of you like blank puzzle pieces for each of you. And I would love for you to use the markers. Use your pen on dh I want to know what you uncovered today so we we want to put words, we want to put phrases you could obviously go back to your notes and go back. If you have the word book, you could go back to the workbook and see what it is you wrote and really, you know, take out the things that really made an impression on you. But I think, too, that there is a gut thing here and at the end of the day, if you have joined us all day, if he join...

ed us only for this segment, but I think, you know, like, oh this is my takeaway or like these are the things that I know are going to make up my dream career so that's what we wanted now, right on these career puzzle pieces, which I think are on their way. And for those of you that have the workbook, page forty five is just a page of blank career blank puzzle pieces and you could write in the pieces and you could also george moore if you need more. But this is what we covered today. We covered the true stories of grown up career changers. We made our career fairy tale. We did friends and family findings. We focused on our dreams and what are scary dreams were and what would make life feel like a dream. We did our role model relay who were the people that you wrote down or pens? And what was it about them that gives you something you want to emulate? Proud moment or moments? What was it that made you proud and your past and your vital values? Eso you might decide to put all five vital values, get their own puzzle pieces, you might say no, you know, I think this one in particular, like, is really sticking with me today s o before we as we're passing that out, I love this, you each have your own clipboard and this is what's going what you're gonna hold on to for the next three days and be careful because it's not like glue down or anything like that uh but I would love to hear just what some of the takeaways or what you know you're writing on these puzzle pieces oh, I see joanne writing already on her workbook oh, you're writing that was down okay, um just make sure yeah make sure that you have space start your own stuff down why not me that's a great take away why not mean that's a puzzle piece? Who else? Um your your proudest moment so you have that affair oh, yeah, yeah, but I might not be explaining myself well, um okay, I want you to come up with the your tea words or phrases their takeaways from today that you knew that you know we're going to be part of your of the big picture of your dream career. So your puzzle pieces for example jenny's puzzle puzzle pieces I feel like I could hone in on yours might be, you know, creativity crows shang working in a group tangible outcome like that might be just what you know like you have left with today on what you know is going to make up your dream career is that kind of right? Okay, fantastic eso does that make more sense that's what we're looking for what your particular values dreams friends of family finding but not everything. Just the things that have really stuck today but, you know, are important. If anyone needs help kind of getting there, let me know. And I could kind of coach you through each day. So I think the end of every day, the end of every day you'll be able to do this. And obviously you keep writing in the workbook he writing and your puzzles. So I would say personal transformation? Absolutely. And health and health growth seems to be a key word for you today. Perfect. Love it. Love it. I love it. It's sort of fast track. Yes, yes, yes, I know that I have so many now. Uh, andre has all the markers meet. You need stacey. What do you write now? Uh, so one of the things I admire and my friends is them telling it like it is like you, I'm kind of a people pleaser. So when I was thinking about the values of role models, my friends came up and the ones that I thought up for people that like straight to the point, like a big studio, yeah, and I want to do that, yeah, I love that. So that's really great and it's and it's going to bring up a point that jen came to me at the break with like what happens when you feel yourself on the cusp of kind of shifting you know when you're doing this work you're probably on the cusp of things shifting and so while I don't want encourage you to try to predict what your values they're going toe b a you know, six months from now or a year from now I want you to honor the things that you've really recognize that you want to start working towards where you want to be changing so I love stacy that you brought that up that you know, okay, I know I'm a people pleaser, but I want to start moving into this so part of your career puzzle could be what you're want to be moving into what you want to be moving towards jennifer you're nodding a lot thank you. Yeah, I just feel also that like part of it, the work that I've been doing about honing in on what I wanna be when I grew up is about putting out there putting myself out there so that I'm showing my imperfection that I'm kind of learning how to accept myself on dh then and being more authentic so like take it or leave it you either love it or you don't and then the more that I do that what I'm hoping is that maybe that'll start a chain reaction of other people reading and going she thinks she can, so I can't, uh section coach little s o that that's amazing. So however you want to summarize that in your puzzle pieces authenticity telling it like it is that to me also means vulnerability, allowing yourself to be vulnerable, you know, in in your professional life, um, and inspiring others seems to be a piece for you two big time, anything coming through in the chat of what people are taking away saying, helping others and creativity to the how's two of the pieces of the puzzle she's uncovered today, paula jay's saying, identify your own path and don't let friends, family or opinions pull you away from that dream. I love this, you got I didn't expect this, but you guys were coming up with kind of your own mantra xas you're here and your own kind of phrases to live by and I freaking love that I love this. Um, laura she's saying in regards to role models, my main inspiration from my career move is only slightly in front of me and regards to business, but every time I think of her it makes me so happy like I feel I can do it too I love that's fantastic, so just feel free, tio still, you know, obviously include everything you need to include you could always write on the back of puzzle pieces teo, I love jenny's already doodling, so feel free to obviously won't form a picture but make it pretty and do what you want to with it. I love stacy doodles to and feel free if we could get some overheads of ah, of what the studio audience is writing down and what their puzzles look like um, because it's interesting, I've never done this with my clients before, but I think having a real visual representation of the things that you're taking away uh just is a quick like summary and gets to the heart of this is what I know is important to me uh, and so we could just keep kind of going back to that and again using it as is as that compass for your dream career, what else is happening in the chat and good people still chatting along? Hey, any questions, any questions from the students today we haven't had many questions from you had lots of great interaction, but anything particularly that you'd like to ask michelle no, yeah, um could you is this no keep time for you to maybe touch on how you did make that transition, as because I I have a hard time visualizing how you were able to finish your coaching classes, get clients and still have a fifty hour a week job like I'm wondering, when would I? You know, when would you be coaching these people on? Would you be taken? I would have loved to talk about that, so everyone still be writing and focusing on your puzzle pieces, but I'll give you an overview of this, and I'll also mentioned my effective escape workbook that you could find on amazon you could find on when I grow coach dot com in the books uh, paige, because I go into detail here as to how I did it and how I think I could have done it better. Um, but really, I'm not ashamed to admit that I did my coaching and I did my certification on my lunch breaks, nights and weekends, I had to say no to a lot of happy hours I'm all about, but what resonates with me is that when you say yes to something, it means you have to say no to something else. So if you're saying yes to something, you could think of it as what do I have to say no to in order to get their cause, the time is not gonna magically fall out of the sky, so, uh, so it was a lot of nights it was a lot of weekends it's a lot of long showers and it was a lot of time at work because I got a blessing in disguise when I was moved across the street toe work uh in a separate office space that my building but that my company bought prerace pre recession and I was separated from my manager and I was off the floor where like my computer was in the in midst of, like a million people and I didn't even have, like, cubicle walls or anything and, uh, I was away from my manager and I was in a spot where I was by myself and I can position my computer to the side and when I was on the up enough with my work and I need my manager wasn't around, I was writing block post and I was learning twitter and I was answering emails and I don't see a problem if that I made sure not to publish the block post like during the work day because I didn't want that I don't want them to say you published this twelve thirty on a wednesday like y you know, um I tried to cover my tracks, but you know, that's why? Even though I was in new york city, which is the home of every creative person I didn't I built my business online so stuck in that stupid cubicle and so it really was my limitations of how do I get my certification? I took I went to international coach academy all their classes were over the phone on dh that's how I coach over the phone and over skype, which I didn't think was going to be the case. When I first got into life coaching, I was kind of wary of learning and that environment, but it turned out to be great. There were classes starting from six o'clock in the morning until eleven o'clock at night, four days a week. There were classes on the weekends, so I was able teo really fit stuff in when I was free, um, there were lunch hours that I reserved a conference room and I went in and I coach my clients and I had my lunch hour and I didn't build the company for my lunch hour. That was my lunch hour. No one ever really gave me a problem, but what was important that I realized I could have done the whole transition a little earlier if I got smarter about it. So I eventually asked myself, what's going to make me confident and comfortable in order to make this transition, and for me, the answer wass I need to have, um, enough. Clients coming in or consultation calls coming in I don't have a number in mind I wasn't looking to reach some goal, but I just had to have this feeling that people in the world knew that I existed. I had to have enough money in the bank and this was I think the biggest thing that I should have could have done differently like that should work. Um it was that I started saving every scent I made for coaching in a separate account, but I never supplemented it. I would take money out when I when I got a professional logo design I would take it out my business expenses I would take it out, but I was never putting my birthday money and there I was never putting my bonuses in there. I was never putting anything more than the money I was making coaching. So once I knew in december two thousand nine that I could quit in march of twenty ten once I got my bonus, which was one of the only good things about that job working in finance, I still got a bonus in twenty ten I said, oh, if I put that money in this account, I'm essentially giving myself a five, five months of severance on and I know I could make that last for seven months or eight months if I cut back on things and if I came up with that number sooner I probably could have reached it sooner and recognized it sooner but instead I kind of did it the other way and I went, oh oh there's enough money there I don't have to pull the plan b emergency cord to quickly um and the other thing that was important was my website and my presence online that you know as I mentioned before I had a very, very, very basic site I had a logo but that was kind of it and so I knew that when it was time to leave my job and I gave someone my business card I better be making an impression and so that's when I hired a professional web designer and my new site debuted in january of twenty ten so when I saw the money and I saw the site and at that point I had too many people who wanted to work with me then I have timeto work for during nights and weekends and lunch hours without falling over andi I had that money in the bank I went oh it's time to leave so that was my whole journey and what the workbook takes you through is how to figure out for you what's going to make you comfortable and confident what's the money peace what's the business building peace what about health insurance? What? You know all of that stuff that you know, keeps us up at night kind of takes you through so that's my story can I see what you guys are reading? I know it's tough to hold up but I would love here everyone's takeaway is is that I'm appreciating the job I had uh huh and that there are a lot of parts of that work that I was doing for twenty plus years that I really liked how so you know how to carry that forward and then supplement it with these other things that would be nice to do photography travels along with what I've been doing I love that you're seeing that right and again it's all about the positive spin when we're able to look at I'm not looking at those twenty jobs I had in seven years you think I'm the flick in person and I don't follow through and like, no, that actually makes me like a really good learner and good, you know, pick things up quickly and I love that you're seeing the positive piece of it and how it could support you moving forward. Great. What about you? Nichols? Um, I think one of the biggest things I've realized just in the last few minutes was, um, you know, I quit my job in february to travel with my boyfriend cause that was his job, but we traveled all over the u s and parts of that I start to feel like this is not responsible of me and sissy back in my job making money we set it up toe toe work that way but I was starting to get like internal thing almost feeling guilty uh um so I came back early and started doing real estate again because I was doing that before on the side and I put a lot of work and effort into it in the last couple months and I'm starting to feel like I don't think this is what I want to do I'm more happy with, you know, doing the traveling and things like that so I think I'm going to start moving away from the real estate start really doing something I really want to do happy list and you could use the real estate if that's already established for you and you feel like it's a good day job because you don't have to reinvent a wheel and you could just pick up where he left off it could be a good a transitionary job for you fantastic thank you for sharing that stacy what you got going on baby steps because when I saw you in april so pumped up I was like yep soul sucking job and all that stuff that I'm going to do you know nothing I didn't quit quit my job it's okay it's on lee I mean, I've been I just kind of made a commitment to myself after I had a difficult time last year personally and so I was like I don't wantto do anything for the rest of my life that I don't want to do like I don't wanna have to say yes to everything I want to be able to say no I don't want to do that doesn't make me feel good I'm not happy I'm not fulfilled passionate about it whatever so um now working part time with the same job that I was working before but it leaves me more time to commit just trying to grow my business and to spend time with my daughter and stuff like that so so far it's working out I had a freak out moment cause I was like they don't have a part time position for me like it was gonna happen in the health care and all that stuff I did so I freaked out a little bit but I just kept saying half a half faith it'll be ok it'll be ok and so far it is okay like you know I'm getting the hours I need and I'm able to commit more time of my business so it's is working out love it thank you for letting the lesson was fixed yeah baby the baby says they on and also like saying no like really saying stepping into saying no trying out saying no it seems to be a big thing to for you what did you write down? I know I said all your puzzle pieces for you, but well, I had one that we didn't talk about yes tell me but, um I think I've been stuck in this idea that you have one job like, you know, like the goal is to have a single job at the end but I could make money or, like spend my time doing different types of things like why try to make this one kind of job to fit into when I could be doing a bunch of different things, which is something I never let myself really think it's hard because we're not told about that when I told that that's an option like you know, I know for me and god bless my traditional family and they want to keep me safe and they want to make sure that I'm comfortable but I think what everyone's been told over and over again and that you know, you grow up, you go to college major and something you get a job and whenever you majored in you don't have to stay at the same company anymore, but you have to climb a ladder somehow and then you retire and if you're jewish girl like me from long island, you move to florida and then you die and that should be your life, so I think when that is the story we're told over and over and over again and you know, I hope I'm so glad to hear that you now have this new perspective that see what people are doing and they're doing these things in in plain sight, but yet we're not latching on to the fact that like this's actual this is actually a way to make money this is actually a career this is how I could put this together. So thank you that's such an important takeaway jennifer, I what about you have so many things I s so some of my pieces are to be a helpful resource for empowering women um, to be collaborative, I like the idea that of kind of being an expert in the sense of knowing what types of things kind of like some of the things that you've exercises that you've been working through kind of having an idea of what works to help people hone in on what's going to make them happiest, but also the idea that it's okay to be co creating that with somebody let it be a collaborative thing where you know that somebody has those answers in them and they were helping them draw those out you know, such a coach and so yeah and then again about the freedom I love the idea of time with my children, I love the idea of time to travel and freedom financially to be able to do some of those things do not look at you know sometimes your friends go somewhere whatever it to be able to say yes I have the flexibility on the finances to do with that you know and tow have those experiences with my friends and family it's great to not have to ask anyone for time on and check your vacation days and all that stuff they go oh, I need to ask my boss if I could go to san francisco and then you know, kind of talk ification onto it. Boss does that we want to do? Yes. Okay. Okay. Yes, it was like the best conversations that I have with jenna. What about you? Um so travel was a big repairing team for me today, um and then finding some way to mesh it more fluidly with, um, creativity and marketing because it's still a huge passion, it's just one that I think I figured out to the extent I need to right now. Ah, so working on these other areas would be helpful um and then feeling good about being creative without being practical? Well, I think through the business plan of it or something way too big picture ah, and then, uh it was really interesting to figure out, uh, through the interview questions that people think I take a lot of risks because unless this pointed out I didn't I don't think you want to come up with that yeah that's awesome embracing it fantastic thank you jen's we hear from you yet no, I think we've been going around in a circle so okay so I still I'm not sure what I want to be when I grew up but you had all day what is wrong with you? Hurry it up hurry it I have to learn at my own pace yes thank you thank you fabulous um and you andrea I definitely had freedom is a big piece for me both financial and thyme and a night I came up with courage which I didn't have before when I was up there but somebody said it and I just felt really right to be able to have the courage teo whatever take the next step and then I wrote down forty five minutes I had never heard that before and I've been struggling with um we always sit down and watch tv after dinner and I always feel bad that I haven't gotten something done for myself work so I was going to ask you is that like, forty five minutes what you said it was the perfect amount of it's like a science thing okay thing I read about science that like someone has proven that that's the right amount of time to trick yourself, it's actually doing something. So it doesn't seem like it's so long. You won't get up and do it right. You'll actually have enough time to make headway on what you're doing, right. So forty five minutes is enough time to actually just advanced what you're doing right, and still have time to spend with him. After that, I thought that was a great idea.

This class was sooo incredibly fun and inspiring. It was wonderful to meet Michelle and interact with her in person. She is warm, kind, approachable and genuinely passionate about helping creatives find a career they can love. Having been raised to believe that the only route to a secure retirement was to find a job with a pension or, at least, a good 401k, this class gave me the courage to believe that I could do work I love and still finance a fabulous life in retirement. It also put things in perspective because it helped me to see that I deserve to be happy as much as anyone else who has carved a successful niche for themselves doing work they feel good about. And, it reminded me that if I try something and discover it isn't the right fit, the worse that can happen is that I go find that job with a pension at that point. So what? Why not me? Amen! xoxo, Jen

My dad used to tell me, "You don't get to do what you love. You just learn to love what you do." For years and years, I've been wandering from job to job wondering why I just wasn't feeling the love, no matter how much I learned to be good at what I do. Although, I tried to resign myself to the idea that work would always be something to dread day in and day out, I couldn't help but day dream about the elusive "perfect" job! I searched for years for tests or counselors who could help give me some direction as to what I would be good at and just before I lost hope, I found this class. I snuck it in during work on my cellphone (shh don't tell lol) and was running back to my desk when I had to be pulled away. It's nice to know someone understands what I've been going through and Michelle's energy is just so positive and motivating that I know that I can make things happen! I watched the free live broadcast but even before the end of day 1 I knew this class was a resource I'll gladly pay for! I would and have recommended this class to many people I know feel the same way I do! Changed my life! We're not made to fit into a mold so why not create your dream career! My review in one word? Amazeballs!

I purchased this course and made sure to finish it before 2015 started. It was so easy to go through the course and I made sure to be diligent in actually doing the activities and homework. I never knew there were other MULTI-PASSIONATE out there like me! I thought I was just a confused human being who needs to figure out her life! Haha! Michelle's energy and passion to help others are so eminent in the way she presents and guides us. I love the setting of Creative Live as well because I felt involved with the studio audience despite having to watch these sessions by myself. :) I learned so much about myself, about how I can incorporate my multiple interests into a unique ball of career perfectly molded for me, by me. All thanks to the help and wisdom of Michelle's experiences and talents. What a great end of 2014 and a great way to start 2015! THIS COURSE IS WORTH YOUR TIME AND MONEY. :)
