Post Production Overview

Alright, so once the wedding is all said and done and we're back home, what does the delivery time look like? So for us, it's six to eight weeks. The reason why we like that amount of time after the wedding is because there's a shift in the couple's perception of, you know, the events that happened on their wedding. If we deliver photos the day after, a few days after, even the week after the wedding, they remember too much. The wedding is still so vivid in their memory and everything that happened, every interaction that they had with their guests is just so clear in their mind so if a photo isn't there because for whatever reason, you know we miss something or we didn't get a photo or it's not something that we're delivering, well they're going to remember all of that. What happens, over time, over the few weeks after the wedding is the wedding itself becomes sort of a blur of a memory and when they receive their photos the photos become the new visual memories. We experienced that...

at our own wedding. We got our wedding photos within six to eight weeks, I forget exactly and that's exactly what happened with us. Like the day after the wedding the things that you remember are so random and specific but they're actually not necessarily you know the most important things or things that were even photographed and then overtime it's really that blur. It's like I don't remember specifics as much anymore, I just remember that it felt amazing. I know that people cried, I know peopled laughed, and I know it was this great thing and then the photos come along and they completely replaced, not replaced but you know but complimented these kinds of memories that we had and they reminded us of specific moments. They showed us all sorts of things we hadn't even seen and so then that just becomes our experience with the photos. Yeah, there's also a lot of work that goes into the photos, you know between culling them, editing them and all of that. We do want to take our time with the artistry that goes into the images after the wedding. I think delivering them too quickly kind of takes a little bit of that away and we are very consistent with a six to eight week mark. You know we talk about it in our initial meeting with clients, it's there in our contract, we remind them when we send the pre wedding checklist. So there are no surprises, they know the whole time all along the process that it is going to take six to eight weeks and we make sure that we stick within you know what we've promised. We even remind them of that after we photograph the wedding, the day after when we send an email just to be like thank you guys so much for having us. We had a blast, we've had a change to look over your images, they're looking great, we're excited to start working on them. Just a reminder, it's going to take us about six to eight weeks before we get everything together. Yeah, so they're well aware. Yep, so then who does what you know after the wedding? So we transfer our own photos on our own computer and we go through them. Each of us. Each of us, yeah. So I have my photos on my computer, Davina has her photos on her computer and we each go through and cull our own images. It's really important to do that first to review your own work and see you know where you made mistakes and also to pick the best photos from each sequence because you know where things came together and where the best photos might live. So we do that for our own photos. Once all the culling is done individually, we bring the images together and merge them by capture time so that everything is you know well organized and sequential and we go through together, sitting at one computer and select the images for the slide show. Once that's done, we will take all of the full gallery images and either Davina edits them or we send them to our editor at the Image Salon and then all of the portfolio and slideshow and blog images, sort of the top 100, 150 that we really have selected, I will sit down and edit those in PhotoShop. Do you want to talk about backup cause you didn't cover that, just after the wedding? Yes, very important step. Because you do that, there's a reason why I want you to talk about it. The one time I did it, it didn't go very well. So one very important step, obviously, is backing up our photos. So as soon as we finish the wedding, each set of photos goes onto each of the computers so now there's a version on the memory cards and there's a version on each of the computers and then we'll put it also on a backup drive right away. With us we just have a little portable hard drive that we bring with us. If family members are traveling with us or even if it's just the two of us, we make sure that everything is in different bags so that if one bag gets stolen on our way back, everything doesn't disappear. At least we have a hard drive or we have our computers or we have our cameras so at least there's a version of the photos that live somewhere. Once we get home, we'll put the photos on an additional hard drive which then goes into a fireproof, bolted, waterproof safe in our house so you know even if disaster strikes, everything still remains safe. It sounds really like crazy but that's how we cover our bases and the last thing we would want to do ever is lose any client's files especially if it meant that it was our fault cause we weren't prepared. So we're overly crazy to make sure those files don't go anywhere. Yeah.

Holy Moly! I have been very familiar with Davina & Daniel for several years and I also work closely with Image Salon for the past 3 years. I loved their relatability, raw honesty, human connection, and their teaching method. It was also super helpful to see the GoPro footage on a real wedding day and walk through their thought process with them. A refreshing wind of inspiration has now flooded my mind and attitude. I am excited to begin my 8th year of weddings with a clear mind and full heart. These two are the REAL deal and I am so happy I made this investment. Thanks, CL for always bringing the BEST of the BEST.

I’ve been following Davina and Daniel’s work for years and suffice it to say, they are in my top 6 all time favorites. I was so excited to watch this creative live and it didn’t disappoint. From their approach to shooting through the moments, to their stunning locales and minimalist gear, there is something for everyone in this class. Both Daniel and Davina have a tremendous knowledge of photography and their willingness to share and educate is second to none. Oh, and just so you know, they are also the nicest people on the planet. Super sweet, amazingly talented. Thanks for having them on.

Davina and Daniel are fantastic presenters as well as an exceptional photo team (plus they are super nice people, too!). I love their approach and methods and felt like there is so much value in this course. Even though I've been photographing for a long time, I took away a lot of great value gems from their course and look forward to applying several to my own business!
