Hair and Jewelry Tips for Headshots

All right, so first look, I could take a shot like this, but her hair's a disaster area and we gotta fix it. Alright, your hair's fine up top on the bottom. It's, just stop right there. Turn towards the camera. All the women around I can almost do this. This is my trick. Because you guys is the photographer. You're not gonna be reaching in their island makeup artist. That helps with the women he usually goes in, sets up the hair for me leaves I don't wantto going back in and back out. So I have to educate my my my subject on this so here's one of my moves, I don't like hair sprawl. I don't like its sprawling over the shoulders. I don't like it. I don't like it like like like I don't like it doing that. I don't like the I like clean shoulders. I don't mind if it comes down like this. But then this has to be clean, there's all sorts of stuff that when she was just in there that herod and did you see the hair disaster area. So so this is the move that you want to dio all the women, you gu...

ys, I'll do this, if you're at home, do this one on because it's really kind of bizarre because most women if I say flip your hair, flip your hair forward to the front no no no no with your hands just flipping boring your hair in front of yourself okay that's normally what they do but that wasn't bad she grabbed it and pulled it that's actually not bad because she didn't get anything on the shoulders there's nothing touching here that's pretty these like little things bug me so I'll be like I'll make sure that none of that there this has to be centre centre that she's not gonna be able to see it right who's their mirror do you think that works for a head shot then thing it's too much, isn't it? No, no don't take it on don't take it off let's say she's the client that goes I need my jewelry right? What am I going to do? I have to make them have I'm going to shoot some and I'm gonna be at the end I'm gonna be like wait a minute, hold up do some for me take now you're open and taking it off but let's shoot some with it just because she's she's going to act like she's a pain in the neck client that wants to have it on alright also with earrings, all of this takes up attention away from the actual headshot so put your hair back behind you I'll just show you the trick that I was talking about everybody put their fingers like this the women well I mean the guy anybody you guys all gotta learn this this is good go over your head touched the center you're next separate the hair back there if you've got it and pull through like this there there and now I just go like this okay there well don't go crazy so she can't see there's no mirror in here what do I have to do who's in charge of making sure this hair looks good I am which is tough for me because I'm not a hair person but I got to do it I gotta kind of get a sense of it so the part up top looks good this looks good this separation is okay I think that's pretty good I think that's much better than it was I think I can work with that let's center this sucker doing all right pretty good can we work with that much better okay let's get shot again in there all right after all that I'm finally taking a picture guys here we go scooch back an inch good I don't want her head on my light convergence I think that's pretty good there you go home and hold it now c camera it's good now what did I say I say anything I said nothing did I get a nice grave fall off on that background or one how's our guest shot uh situation hold on it's a little warm for me let me just check my settings so I shooting the capture one and um it's a fifty one seventy seven so I usually let the shot come in I'm big on shooting on a calibrated monitor I shouldn't x ray I use x ray products I use an eye one display pro you can't you're running blind if you're not shooting on a calibrated monitor all right especially if you're working with somebody like me that's coaching you on this stuff I don't want to be bothered if you're not working with me on a calibrated monitor I want at least see what you're seeing so if you don't have ah system for calibrate and that's ridiculous so get it the I just shot and this is what the cameras came in at I'm it I always go to my white balance and I do it by eye so I'm looking at fifty it looks really warm to me so I'm going to bring it down it was a fifty one seventy seven I'm bringing it down to that forty eight, twenty seven I'm gonna go forty eight hundred the tents at one point own I'm just going to see I usually like the tent and I'd like a little bit of of pink in it so I'm gonna leave it at one point oh, you can go green or whichever way those little tweaks I'm there. I mean, I'm really happy with I can go in and even mess with it further, but I'm going to leave it there. I think it's fine and don't apply that to that now the rest the rest of the session gets what? I don't have to change a thing. I'm done. I do it right. Right, then first shot. Okay, so now can you see that shocked in it. All right. How do you feel about that necklace? I think if I yeah, I think for headshots. Let's. Take it off. Don't you think I make them feel like they made the decision? All right, the hair looks pretty good. You like the hair? Is the hair okay? I think it looks pretty good. It's not a cz unruly is when you first got in there. All right. Go like this. The hare got a little I don't want no don't kill it. Yeah, a little bit that's it just don't grab it and pull it like now I want I need your chins up in that shot do you see that my first thing that I do with everybody guy's, jawline my first video that I put out it's got almost three million views if you haven't seen it you're living under a rock where the ship bang came from go watch it jam your jawline towards the carrying any given indented into it to chin down slightly now are you sure about this left side I don't know hold that stop looking so miserable good okay that's the that's the first thing I usually say to people guys did I immediately what do we want we want reactive smiles we want riel smiles we want riel energy all right I want you to never say the s word again right then and can you smile for me smart now I need you to smile smile no smile no I need you well now she's laughing because I said smile but the first smile gets serious all right now smile with teeth okay this is what I'm talking about this is what you get when you say smile does that have juice behind it I don't think so I don't think so people I want to get rid of photographer saying smile I want to get rid of photography same one oh here didn't in one two one two three oh yeah we'll be right what b does nothing for us right there's nothing there's nothing that you know that your fate your do you know what your face looks like right now you know what it feels like, right? But you don't know what it looks like, so I'm going to tell you I'm gonna work with you and I'm going to give you the tips that will get you to feel more confident so let's look at angles let's first of all, your chin's been up a lot, so chin down more than you think I want you to feel like you're like this but you're not now jam your forehead out slightly towards me that's pretty good close mouth tiny smile is fine because you need it say tiny small tiny smile how we're does that feel oh that I can always get her toe hold that chin I can always take the laughter if the laughter zero usually shoot it or we'll count this exposure yeah I think we're fine so let's let's work your angle's a little bit turn your body a little bit this way we're gonna know she's not bad over there hold that that said there we go totally different angles her face look at the difference in the shot chin down forehead out for me there's two there's little hairs that are getting away from me right here guys, I'm going to tell you this once and this is the only time to say it I became a better photographer because of attention to detail my attention to detail is off the freaking charts and it happened over the last couple years because that these it's the little things that make a huge difference I want you to notice there's a million things going through my brain when I'm when I'm photographing and it's all based on these little tiny attention to detail things so your attention to detail has to go through the roof and you have to be less technical you have to get this we got the settings were good the only other thing I have to do is get that white background fired up when I'm ready to go but right now I like the way the greys looking drop your front shoulder down lean a little bit this way lean back slightly stand up and stand up straight like that yeah drop the shoulder this way turn the shoulder a little bit out you're a little too twisted I dropped the shoulder because of john like everything's based on john line first so if I lean her back lean back like this and go chin down like this I lose jawline right? But if I stand you up straight and I go like that now jam your forehead out good what do you do with your hand, your pockets or something? Pressure yeah patricians and your pockets put your fake ones put your foot put your thumbs in your belt loops or something do something with your arms call that oh, that oh I'll show you want to do with the arms I got a new video coming out oh that tilt the head this way a little bit hold that this is this is one of the things that's in the book you'll see me do if you've seen me before I do suction cup to the face everybody imagine that my hands suction cup to your face right now till this way till that way turn this way turn this way that works great but with my attention to detail I got even I got even better and I like this one even veteran I've been using it more on it it is in the book it was one of the ones that made into the book right at the end you ready? Imagine that I chronic chopped you in the face and my hand is stuck in the middle of your face hold on I'm getting laughter over here I need to use it there you go good she dropped the show turn the shoulder back this way hold that chin down slightly there you go good. So I karate chopping the face you ready now I can get the angles the way I want them it's just easier to tell the angle that the hands on rather than this so I used both but most the time I'm karate chopping people all day long stand up straight when you're leaning forward like that. If they lean forward, what happens? Watch my my ear height when I leaned forward, my ears were up here. Guess what happened? Your camera just went up. What don't I like? I don't like shooting down on people. What do I have to do if she does that? I gotta lower my can't don't mean me. Lower my camera, jam your forehead out, turn your shoulder back a little bit, hold that, tilt the head, little karate, chop it. There you go, good, chin down, slightly that's. Nice, good.
