Menu Overview
It is time to dive into the menu system, and this is where you may wanna print off your own version of the recommended settings. This is the entire menu on one page, and all the different pages there. And I've got my little recommendations that we're gonna go through. And so as we go through all the different settings on here, mentally I kind of break them into three different categories. The first, the most common, is stuff that makes no difference to the way you work. You could change it and it's not gonna have any impact really on the way you work and how the camera works for you. And that's the most common, is just subtle little adjustments in the background. Then there are some things that you're gonna change because that's the way you want them to work the whole time you operate the camera and you'll never need to come back to them. And so we'll set those once, we'll be done with them, and they're over with. And then there's the other ones that you wanna come back to on a regular...
basis. And those are the ones that maybe you circle or you put a star by it. Maybe they're the ones that you set to one of the custom buttons, one, two, or three. Or maybe it's one of the areas that you put in the function menu. And so anything that you use on a regular basis, you wanna make it as easy as possible for you to get to that and change that. Alright, let's dive in to the menu. Alright, so, obviously you hit the menu button and that gets you access to the multiple tabs in here. And each of the tabs has a different grouping of information. You'll use the top dial or the wheel in the back to up, down, left, and right, navigate your way to the right location. Now there is real no difference between camera settings one and two. As far as I can tell, it's just kind of a continuation. There is a very small grouping in the wireless and application. And I'm now doing something that I call a settings map. I wanna give you an overview of what we're gonna be going through. And so, for instance, right there, that is a page of information within camera settings, and there's another page, and that's a sub-menu. And so there's a lot of sub-menus buried in the menu system. We talk about this a lot. So a lot of the camera settings are basic functions for image quality, general operation of the camera. In camera settings two, starting now, there's gonna be a lot of the video features, secondary features, some of the button customization, but there's a lot of stuff in there. The wireless tab has practically nothing in there in comparison. There's a few things for controlling the Bluetooth and the wireless. Very little in the application, but there could be potentially much more. Playback is a very small menu, and the setup is a pretty big menu. And this is a lot of the items that you're not gonna be coming back to on a regular basis, with the exception of formatting the memory card, which we will get into, which is in the setup menu. So that's kinda the size and scope of where things are in the menu system. Now something else you'll notice in the menu system is that there's this little icon that is beside some of the images, or beside some of the text in the menu system. Now, in none of the Sony literature is this ever explained. And so this is just simply my interpretation of what this is. Those items that have the little mountain symbol next to it are only for still images. The ones with the little movie strip by it only affect movie recording. Now there's plenty of other features that are associated only with movie but do not have the movie icon next to it or things that are associated with still images but don't have the still image icon next to it. But it is something to pay attention to if you are looking for a particular type of feature if that icon is next to it.

I've owned the A6000 since it came out and still learned a TON from John's A6500 class. I will definitely be getting his original A6000 class. I'm SO glad he's doing Sony cameras now. Thanks John G. - You are a truly great teacher!

I bought the a6000 course a while back and when I upgraded to the a6500 this was a no-brainer. I love how comprehensive the coverage is and it was a great refresher on previous features. If you're a newbie to the Sony a6500 this is a must!
