[Man Wearing Baseball Cap] Alright so we'll just play you the dual rec sound that we got yesterday. And again, it was okay. Its not that there's anything wrong with it, right? It's just that you didn't feel comfortable playing through it [Man Holding Guitar] No And didn't feel like it was monumous, right? Basically yeah. That the way to put it? I think so. In the room it sounded great, just didn't translate very well through the mics. Yeah. Yeah. I also have a theory that we didn't listen to it very loudly in the room. Yep. We didn't, you know, tube amps always have a bump Yep. Where the volume goes insane. Yep And we are blasting it way louder than how we were hearing it in the room. Sometimes they sound better beneath the buff I've noticed. Yep. So, this is what we got yesterday and, notice it's not that it's a bad tone. (heavy metal music) (laughing) I like, I like this one. That was ax. Yeah. Yeah. So what was it about that tone you guys said...
that it was too dry like what is it about that tone that was uncomfortable for you guys? It highlighted every single little mistake and movement of hands and everything like that. Then when you added more gain it highlighted more of the mistakes as well. So it wasn't that it was like not enough gain, it was literally just that, basically. It was just, yeah. So you just couldn't even you couldn't get comfortable enough I couldn't even get comfortable, no. Okay. Well kind of comfortable enough to feel confident I guess. Exactly. So, this is a 51/50. The first take right after we plugged it in just to see if it was gonna work (heavy metal music) It's just Tighter It's just tighter. I think it's angrier sounding It's not that it has a ton more gain but the gain just has the right kind of aggression to it. It's a little bit more squashed. Mm-hmm In terms of the feel. And you played better. Played a lot better. Yeah, so um, shall we begin? Yeah, let's do it. Alright, you want to Any DI to or meter please? Yeah. (electric guitar strumming) [Man Wearing Baseball Cap] I'm gonna save it. (electric guitar strumming) [Man Holding Guitar] Okay. [Man Wearing Baseball Cap] And, I don't know If you guys have noticed but I'm doing save as every time we do something new. I'm just naming the session something else, cause I like to be able to go back in time to specific places. And I am capturing session file backups every minute, but they don't give me the right kind of info. I mean, if it crashes I can just go back to it, but at least here I know this was the 51/50 test. This is when I was tracking Olly last night. This is when we first started getting guitar tone yesterday. This is when I started comping ANUP. And this one's guitar tracking, where we're getting our guitar tracking. So always do save as and never get confused. Cool. So, new session. I'm gonna get rid of all the old playlists. (mouse clicking) I'm gonna start from scratch. Alright, we're good to go. So you're just going to be hearing the 51/50. [Man Holding Guitar] Okay Alright so you wanna go for complete passes. Yeah I have riffs, yeah. Okay. And obviously whole songs. Well, yeah. (laughs) I never do that. Unless you were tracking drums. Mhm Okay, so eight in. Mhm Alright. (metronome) (heavy metal music) See that already, that was better than anything you played yesterday. Anything, yeah. Maybe because I'm not tired as well because we didn't spend 12 hours getting a guitar tuned. Yeah, I think that definitely has something to do with it, too. [Man Wearing Baseball Cap] I'd like to punch in right at the fill, right here. (heavy metal music) But I kinda like what continues after that. Okay, should I just do the first half again? There was something in the first half I didn't like. Sure. We can just go from there and then stop it in the second half if you want. Sure. Okay. Perfect, ready? Yep. (metronome) (heavy metal music) That was a much better first half. Yeah. (heavy metal music) I didn't get that fill. Yeah let's get that fill again. Okay, cool. Do you want me to start halfway through the riff? [Man Holding Guitar] Yeah, that fine. [Man Wearing Baseball Cap] Okay. (heavy metal music) I think that was a lot better. [Man Holding Guitar] Mhm. (heavy metal music) [Man Wearing Baseball Cap] Cool. Aright, let's just listen to the second half, now let me just note that what I'm punching in I'm always finding a good place to hit record. You see, there's a pause right here in the riff, before this open, that seemed like a great place to hit record. You always want a guitar player playing into a riff, and then out of the riff so that they have momentum because just starting on the riff, on the part they're gonna play, the guitar player will never start in the right feel ever. How do you feel about doing the second half of the second half? Yeah, that's fine. Okay, so alright I'll play it from the riff, from the fill. Okay. And I'll punch in the second half of the song now. (heavy metal music) Yeah. The ending was a bit Yeah, we'll get the ending but I think that the rest was pretty good. Okay. Okay. (heavy metal music) It's that little run at the end, I can't quite get in groove. Yeah. (heavy metal music) Yeah, okay so let's just focus on that. Ready? Yeah. (heavy metal music) I think the run was good but the chord was not. Chord wasn't . (heavy metal music) I missed two of the strings. Okay, ready? (laughs) (heavy metal music) Cool, I think. (heavy metal music) That sounds cool. Yeah. See, it's night and day how much better you're playing. Now and how much better it sounds and feels. Alright? You wanna do the other side? Yeah, why not? Alright. Let's give it a whirl. Check that tuning. Okay, do you want me to turn it down a little bit? Yeah. (electric guitar strumming) I was in tune. Crazy (electric guitar strumming) Ready? Yep. Alright. (heavy metal music) That was mostly really good. Yep. Let's listen to them together. (heavy metal music) Like kinda right around the fill Yep, also right at the start, the first two stops. Mhm. So da da dum was kind of a bit You mean the very beginning? Right at the beginning right at the beginning. Okay. The one left hand side was just not quite agroove to the right one. In my opinion. I agree, yeah. Agreed. So , we'll get first two steps and then skip forward and get through the fill. Yep. Let's just hear throughout the end. Yep. (heavy metal music) I think you can do the second half better, anyways. Yeah, okay. So let's get the beginning. Do you wanna just play through it? Yeah, might as well. (laughs) Ready? Yeah. (heavy metal music) I heard some weirdness, however I think you started off way better. Yeah, I did. So let just figure out where it fell off because it was a better beginning. Okay, cool. Like even the chord was cool. Yeah. So (guitar riff) Halfway through the second half. Yeah. (heavy metal music) Chord in that one was good. (heavy metal music) Yes it was, it's got the run again though. Yep. Ready? Yep. (heavy metal music) Yeah I think that was a lot tighter. (heavy metal music) So, does this riff happen again? No. Like this? No. No? It goes into (heavy metal music) Yeah I mean later on in the song? Yeah. It does? Yeah. I would like to track Olly playing it the other time. Yeah, that's fine, yeah. Do you want to do that now? Yeah, if you want. Olly are you warmed up? No. No? (laughs) Okay, well (laughs) Okay, well I can play it though. You can play it though? Okay so, I'd like to track the same exact riff later on in the song with him. Okay. So we just show how different you guys sound. Okay, yeah sure. Not better or worse. So how long did it take us to track that? 10, 15 minutes. 10, 15 minutes? Yep. How long did we do if for last night, 50? Yeah. (heavy metal music) Well we did about, we did it for about 15 minutes on camera. And then, for about an hour and a half after. (laughter)

I'm just part way though and I'm blown away by the quality approach Eyal takes to getting the best out of the sessions. I love how well everything is explained and Eyals calm manner is just awesome it really makes you want to listen to the gems of wisdom he offers.

Wow is all I can say. This bootcamp goes in so much depth from tuning drums, setting up guitars, to recording and mixing. I have learned so much by participating in this bootcamp. It has taught me some new recording techniques and signal routing for my mixes. I just want to thank Eyal, Monuments, and Creative Live for taking the time to do this. It has been amazing and I will keep going back to these videos.
