Working in 3D

Let's talk about three d so wherever here in the cleverly named three d folder and the first thing I want to show you is the easiest part which is how to create three d text it's scary three d oh my god so I'm gonna go ahead and delete the layer that I created for you so what we have here is just a some type so this is kind of an interesting font called metropolis is free free art deco so I just press tv to grab the type tool clicks in the document typed out a word now comes the three d part so what we want to do is we're going to change our work space to three d and that's easily thanks we're going to try it up to the top right of your photo shot room and use this little pop down menu and just choose three d all that does is open up the appropriate panels we're not going to spend a ten in thailand going over everything that all these things do, but basically and I'll pull this panel out so you guys can see a little bit better basically you're going to use this three the panel to sell ...

photos shot what your extruding so if you can think of if you take something that's two d or flat and you need to make it three dimensional think of it as just being kind of pulled out extruded so that it has sides so you have three options here. We can make a three d postcard, which is a way that you can put flat things in proper perspective on to something else. If you have an empty billboard shot at an angle, then you could create three d art that goes on there in proper perspective, but for just text and even shapes that he created either with the pencil or with photo shops shaped tools. What you want to do is choose this three d extrusion, which is the second bullet or radio button rather right here and these what I'm showing you is not new in the program, but what adobe did was they basically discontinued photoshopped standards. You know there was has been for several years two versions or two editions of photo shop photoshopped, standard and photoshopped, extended and extended was the one that had all the scientific measurement and analysis and three d tools used to also have video. But in c s six and we pulled out video and put that in a standard well, in cc there is no standard anymore. You get extended, so you have everything you have all the three d modeling told you of all the measurement scientific analysis tools if you use those sorts of things, so this is not new, but the three d engine is a little faster in live previews are drawn a little bit faster, a little bit more smoothly that's the new thing, but anyway, I'm just giving you an idea of what you might do if you play around with three d. So if you're going to extrude, create a three d shape out of either a path, shape, layer or text, then you want to choose the second option here. Three the extrusion and then you're going to click create, and what happens here tell me that pail of the way a little bit is several different things. Basically, a three d object starts with a mesh and it can have several surfaces. Ok, which can have a texture applied to you can envision the mesh as chicken wire molded into a three d shape, really, because that's kind of what it is like one of those animal shape wire structure things that usually you see plants and bushes growing through to make them into shape. The textures can be made from anything that you can apply to that mix that could be images that you shot it can be textures that you download from the internet on on on the three d object lives in a scene, okay, the scene can have one or more lights, they're eliminating it, it can have one or more cameras pointing at it cameras can have different views he can see different angles of the three d object the scene may have more than one, three d object in it ours only has one three d object in it right now that's the text and the entire scene lives in an environment that also has its own lighting as well as a ground plane so that's, what you're seeing right here is the ground plane onto which that text is sitting there are a couple of different ways to start manipulating things here show you the layers panel so immediately upon clicking that create three d extrusion button in the three d panel photoshopped in our layers panel created a three d layers you could tell us three d because it's got that little extra badge on it and it's applied default lighting to we're just going to let it roll with default lining because it's beyond the scope of this class to get into camera angles and lighting and all that kind of good stuff but basically you use either the's five buttons in the options bar tio rotate role drag, slide your object around on the ground plane or you can simply click and drag on the object itself so that's what we're going to do here so I'm just clicking and dragging and when I do I'm changing the position of the ground plane now if I click on the three d object as I position my mouse on different parts of it see how that little informational overlay changes so as I position my mouth on the different surfaces remember that chicken mesh chicken wire mesh that we've got going on around here then this is really toggle ing those different buttons in the options bar this is kind of like a non image way of manipulating it in space rather than clicking those buttons and mousing back down and then moving those around so as I could as I position my mouse on different surfaces of that text then I'm going to be moving it in different ways so listen back out just a little bit so when I have the x y or the x or the y and z plain I can move it up or down like that within my scene basically y and z is top to bottom riff front to back okay? So now if I change that to just the z axis then I'm pushing it away in perspective and if I dragged down I'm bringing it closer to me in perspective she can see how that's changing there and you can also scale so it just depends on where what surface she click on when you're clicking and dragging to use this on image control or like I say, you can just use the buttons and the options barnes did this particular one is going to rotate it so you can see that it's been extruded so it's got depth to it now so all kinds of good fun to be had with that so more more time it's just undo through we are with our text okay? We're going to change for the shop to the three d work space the three d panel will open and four shapes or text you're just going to click the second one right here three d extrusion and click create and that's it then you can either click on the three d object and then mouse around to the different surfaces to access these different controls or you can use the exact same controls that are all appearing options bar okay, so it just depends on where you click what you're going to do with it and it does take cem some getting used to definitely but here's a scale so I can make it bigger make it smaller so just depends on where you click as to what what kind of movement you're going to get okay so that's basically text so that's a lot of fun the next anything that you can do I mean there's a million things that you can do but I tried to pick like digestible practical things is to create a three d postcard so for this one and this was that this is a super quick one may skip these panels around so you can actually see what we have here and again, I've got the in the exercise file it's already created for you, but it's, go ahead and turn that off. What I did here is I have a collage rather and I want to turn off all the layers that I'm not going to combine into a new layer into which I'm going to extract ok, so I've got three layers going on here this is going to be our final product, but I don't want that map layer involved because I don't want it to be extruded, so I'm gonna turn his visibility off now, so we just got the what's going to be the foot, the postcard and the text. Well, I need to create a single layer from those two layers how do I do that? I shift click to activate them and then I'm going to stamp them. Okay, so I'm going to tell photo shop a photoshopped take those two layers, create a whole new layer that contains the content on both of those layers, and the key were shortcut for that is a doozy shift option command e on a mac or shift all to control e on a pc so when we do that so shift option, command or shift all command on a pc and then e ok, so now if I turn off those two original layers see how I've got one layer that contains the content of the layers that I had active when I did that that's a great thing to memorize when you need to use a tool that only works on one layer and you can't use a smart object, so we don't want to use a smart object for this three d technique so that's another alternative it's called stamping layers okay, so now we're ready we've got the three d panel already open and for a postcard so basically this is anything that you might want tio create an image onto something and place it on to something else that's in perspective, you could use vanishing point filter, which we're going to use tomorrow, but this is a little bit of different things, so it's going to extrude this postcard? So we're going to say three d postcard and create and its exact same thing that we had before you can either get that panel out of the way and use these controls appear in the options far or you can click on your three d object and again as I'm mouse around, see how the rich over lake near my cursor is telling me how I'm going to be moving that three d object and it's just a matter of experimenting with it, so this is going to move in on the z access, which is basically top to bottom her away from me and forward so it's just a matter of experimenting with it clicking on the different areas so by clicking on the rotating the y axis I can swing it around in space leaving it on the z axis brings it closer or pushes it further away from us so with some experimentation you can create all kinds of amazing things with this so let's just pretend that we finished working with that one I'll go ahead and with my three d panel out of the way here doc it back over here and we'll turn on the one I created for you and we'll go turn on our background you could see him makes anything so it looks like this is a real postcard sitting on top of of a map and over here in the layers panel you can see the heck I've added a stroke tio drop shadow tio second did anything to three d layers and so far as layer effects that you do with any other layer just using the effects but at the bottom of your layers panel so I hope that gets you excited about the three d tools it will definitely take you some time to get used to using this on image control to be calls it a h u d heads up display but just know that to begin using it you have to first click on your object then without clicking anywhere I've clicked to activate that object because I may have several objects in a scene so click on the object that you want to use this heads up display on and then you can either mouse over so that the pieces of the heads up display actually highlight like I'm doing now see how they're turning on their changing colors or you can just click or you khun mouse over to the different surfaces and you will trigger those same methods of movement that air up here in the options bar depending upon where you click and drag your activating one of these guys appear that's brilliant thank you ray for a couple questions absolutely nailed it mostly all the way through the chat rooms you keep answering stuff but we do have a few stragglers I'll start so tonneau says if the conditional action only available on creative cloud know if you have c s six no that's not right it is only available in the creative cloud because it actually came out in december as part of photoshopped thirteen point one or see a six point one but the only way he would have gotten that update is to already have been on the cloud so it is yeah only available because people are crazy about that it's a really powerful fantastic really powerful and we have a question can you export a character style or programs stylus css native yeah, that folks is what you get with on lee with that new feature being in the two versions now so you can't export him. You can't share those styles within design, which drives me insane because that would be a no brainer, but to be honest, if you get that far into character in paragraph styles, you should be in in designing anyway photo shop is not a text editor, okay? Those character progress styles air for small amounts of taste or if you just don't have any other program besides photoshopped but really, if you get heavy into those, that is a big red flag that you should be in in design, but you can't share them among the programs, which would be really, really handy like for web ads, you know, if you'd have styles and in design it be great if you could export him an important mentor photo shops that you could use the same kind of font treatments for the web ad is maybe the company uses for their promotional materials you can't do any of that. The only thing you can do is create him in the document here and photoshopped and then choose to save them is defaults, which is new and cc, and that way they just automatically appear in every new document you open and every new document that you create so existing documents and new documents
