Retouching: Large Forehead

Next thing that I wanted to show you, let's talk about Liquify. So, for his forehead, I'm a little bit, just barely, a little bit above eye level here. You're not really supposed to do that, for someone with a big forehead, cause being a little bit above eye level draws more attention to the forehead. But I wanted to have that connection with his eyes, and I didn't want to be shooting so low. So, it's your balance, and so, you know what, I'm not gonna change what his forehead looks like completely, I'm just gonna help it along, just a little bit. We're going to go to Photo, and I'm going to open this up in Photoshop. Several of the things that I just did you can also do in Lightroom. This is a Photoshop only thing, this particular tool. So I duplicate my background, and I'm going to Filter, Liquify. There are several things that I want to talk about when we are in this mode. So right now, we are just going to pay attention to the left hand side of the page for now, okay? The tool that ...

you're going to use is going to be the Forward Warp tool. It's in the top left-hand corner, and it's a little finger that looks like it's smooshing something. What that allows you to do is it allows you to shift and move pixels. So, instead of completely changing his forehead, what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna make, take a bigger brush, and just like nudge it down, just a little bit. This something I would particularly do with someone who has a receding hairline that they're concerned about that because it's the shape. So I can just come over here and just... You know what I mean? Pull it in just a little bit. So it's not like I gave him a small forehead. But I'm just pulling it down a little bit. So, that's something that I would recommend. You could go further, you have to use your discretion on this. But that is the Forward Warp tool. While I'm at this, I wanted to show you some of the other controls that I had mentioned earlier on. You do need Photoshop CC for what I'm talking about next. What I just did with the Forward Warp Liquify, that's been in Photoshop for many, many versions, so that you all have. Photoshop CC however, in the last few updates, has come out with something called Face Aware Liquify. So what it does is it identifies the features on the face. The eyes, the nose, the mouth, it sees them in the face, and then I can change the shape of them. I would just tell you to play, so you can see what's going on here. So for the eyes, I can make the eyes bigger or smaller, left or right, right? So if you've ever looked at that person that had uneven features, here's your left eye, here's your right eye. You can even out the features. And now you don't have to worry about going in and making it look even. It does it for you, it identifies it for you. The one I find particularly useful is the one droopy eye, right? Because I can shift the direction of the eye. So if it's drooping a little bit this way, I can rotate it. And then also, if somebody's eye is droopy, I can open it up a little bit. So my point is it's much easier to fix those things now. But you do need Photoshop CC for that update. Notice nose width, all of that. But another one that is relevant is forehead. So, I just did the Liquify tool, but it's right here. Here's what his forehead is by default. If I drag it to the left, shrinks his forehead down for me. So, here's what we had before and after. Don't pay attention, I messed up his eyes. [Audience Laughs] [Exasperated Sound] Okay, oops. But there were many other things in there. I can change the nose... Okay, it's gonna freak me out, I have to go fix it. But anyway, you can change the nose, the eyes, the lips, the shape of face, et cetera. One more time for him, what you can do... You can do it manually or do with Face Aware Liquify. Okay?

This class was amazing! It was great seeing a demo class with real people. As a wedding photographer that specializes in offbeat/non traditional couples, it is always good to see how I can enhance all my clients beautiful features, and make them feel their best and confident when I am taking their photos!

I was so excited to get the chance to learn from Lindsay live, and this course did not disappoint! The techniques she shared were insightful and straightforward. I felt like seeing them on different subjects throughout the day really helped to cement the concepts and grow my photography tools to bring out the best in those I'm photographing. I'm not a studio photographer, but the ideas apply in natural light as well.
