Shooting Menu 1

Well it's time to get started on the menu section and there's going to be a lot of stuff in here I mean just look at the sheet look at the size of fun that we had to use on this in order to get everything on one page and I really like having everything on one page just because your eyeballs khun scan it a little bit more easily than going through multiple pages on there so sorry aboutthe small thought but it's just because they have so many different items in here so let's dive in and see what we're going to get ourselves into here so we have kind of a different set up and let me just explain a little bit about the set up on this is most of the controls are going to be in a section called custom controls and they've only kind of they have what looks to be five different sections here but one of those is ten times larger than all the others and they have just put it there it's a little bit different system than other cameras and I know some people have a little bit of a hard transition ...

including myself moving to a slightly different menu system but it's all in there and you gotta admit that it's mostly pretty logical and where things are but it's broken up into a lot of different categories so our first section in here is shooting menu number ones these air some basic controls for controlling the shooting and so hit the menu button and then you're going to use the arrow pad to go up down and left right generally you're going to hit right which is this direction for you guys to enter into a mode and then you can often hit left kind of back out of it the menu button will also back you out of a mode if you're kind of into something and you're like wait no I don't want to do anything just get me out of here hit the menu button and that will safely get you out without changing anything that you don't want to change so first up is cards set up and the two things that you can do in here is that you can erase the pictures or you can reform at the car if you are wanting to clear everything on the card not just the photos but when you take photos there's also a menu directory and there's folders that are 00:01:59.153 --> 00:02:01. put on to the card which is where the pictures get 00:02:01.18 --> 00:02:04. put in if you want to clear everything off it's recommended 00:02:04.13 --> 00:02:08. that you form at the card on a regular basis I rarely 00:02:08.42 --> 00:02:11. have a card go bad on me but I also reform out on 00:02:11.26 --> 00:02:14. a regular basis and so once you've downloaded you've 00:02:14.05 --> 00:02:17. safely checked your backup so that your backup hard 00:02:17.93 --> 00:02:20. drive's got your images your images on the hard drive 00:02:20.67 --> 00:02:22. then it's time to reform at the memory card it's something 00:02:22.85 --> 00:02:26. that I do generally each time I go out shooting photos 00:02:26.59 --> 00:02:28. where I want to make sure that I have a fresh clean 00:02:28.79 --> 00:02:29. card ready to go 00:02:31.37 --> 00:02:35. next up is reset my set and this is where you get 00:02:35.01 --> 00:02:38. to customize the camera and a lot of that controls 00:02:38.59 --> 00:02:41. and features of the menu section the way you want 00:02:41.31 --> 00:02:44. it to work now the reason that there is my set one 00:02:44.93 --> 00:02:47. two three and four is that you might have four different 00:02:47.81 --> 00:02:50. parameters for shooting for instance you may have 00:02:50.57 --> 00:02:53. travel photography and portrait photography and sports 00:02:53.04 --> 00:02:56. photography and dog photography that you are doing 00:02:56.06 --> 00:02:59. in each one of those requires a different set of function 00:02:59.01 --> 00:03:01. settings on the camera but you want to quickly change 00:03:01.73 --> 00:03:04. between one and the next but each of them has ten 00:03:04.52 --> 00:03:07. different things you change in the camera this allows 00:03:07.0 --> 00:03:10. you to set a variety of settings and lock them in 00:03:10.55 --> 00:03:14. to my set one or my set two or my set three this is 00:03:14.5 --> 00:03:17. also where you can go in and just reset all the settings 00:03:17.7 --> 00:03:20. on the camera so when I play with the camera I'll 00:03:20.77 --> 00:03:22. play around do all sorts of things with it and I'll 00:03:22.84 --> 00:03:24. think oh boy I got to go teach a class on this camera 00:03:24.97 --> 00:03:27. I better get back to the way it was when it came out 00:03:27.04 --> 00:03:30. of the box I go into reset and I do a full reset on 00:03:30.62 --> 00:03:33. the camera to get it back to the factory default things 00:03:33.66 --> 00:03:36. and so it takes everything back to normal it does 00:03:36.96 --> 00:03:39. leave the date and the language 00:03:40.75 --> 00:03:43. in place so that doesn't change and there are two 00:03:43.11 --> 00:03:46. different settings there is a basic setting which 00:03:46.22 --> 00:03:49. is just going to be some of the more basic menu items 00:03:49.24 --> 00:03:50. that it's going to change and then kind of a full 00:03:50.83 --> 00:03:54. city where resets everything else except for the date 00:03:54.17 --> 00:03:56. and language there's kind of two different levels 00:03:56.71 --> 00:03:58. and I'm not going to go through the full list of what 00:03:58.66 --> 00:04:01. does it doesn't do this doesn't do that but it's either 00:04:01.47 --> 00:04:04. a basic level or pretty much everything on the reset 00:04:05.08 --> 00:04:08. now you can also go in and as I say program you're 00:04:08.01 --> 00:04:09. four different settings in the way that you do that 00:04:09.89 --> 00:04:13. on your camera is to set the camera up exactly as 00:04:13.84 --> 00:04:17. you want it for a particular scenario so sit down 00:04:17.3 --> 00:04:18. go through all the functions think about everything 00:04:18.95 --> 00:04:21. that you would want turn on or turn off or have operate 00:04:21.67 --> 00:04:24. in a certain way and then you would go into my set 00:04:24.88 --> 00:04:27. and then one of the numbers and you would register 00:04:27.38 --> 00:04:30. that as your settings in the camera and then you can 00:04:30.64 --> 00:04:32. go set it up for your second settings and register 00:04:32.73 --> 00:04:36. those is number two and so forth and so this is something 00:04:36.57 --> 00:04:39. that some people use and some people don't use you 00:04:39.61 --> 00:04:42. don't feel like you have to use it I don't use it 00:04:42.42 --> 00:04:44. because I just do such a wide variety of photography 00:04:44.91 --> 00:04:47. I'm not doing the same thing over and over again but 00:04:47.81 --> 00:04:50. if there is something you do wanna repeated basis 00:04:50.12 --> 00:04:52. and you're constantly switching back and forth I would 00:04:52.77 --> 00:04:54. get in there and start playing with these features 00:04:54.63 --> 00:04:58. and see if you can save yourself some time and simplify 00:04:58.14 --> 00:05:01. the operation changing the menu controls around 00:05:02.34 --> 00:05:05. all right moving forward next item on the list is 00:05:05.36 --> 00:05:07. the picture mode we talked a little bit about this 00:05:07.37 --> 00:05:11. before we saw this in the quick menu and so this is 00:05:11.92 --> 00:05:14. where you can change the look of your jpeg images 00:05:14.94 --> 00:05:18. has no impact on your rhyme edges just remind you 00:05:18.61 --> 00:05:20. that your raw images are always the raw data coming 00:05:20.93 --> 00:05:23. off of it but in these cases you can go in and you 00:05:23.84 --> 00:05:28. can adjust the vivid levels of the colors the sharpness 00:05:28.63 --> 00:05:30. that's being put on it and 00:05:32.14 --> 00:05:34. as we go through this menu section you're going to 00:05:34.72 --> 00:05:37. see on the right hand side of the menu that you see 00:05:37.82 --> 00:05:41. on screen there my recommendations and so in this 00:05:41.68 --> 00:05:44. case I think either I enhanced for just kind of an 00:05:44.2 --> 00:05:47. intelligent enhance for kind of a light improvement 00:05:47.83 --> 00:05:51. on most images or natural would be my recommendation 00:05:51.94 --> 00:05:56. and so these are recommendations and the ones in red 00:05:56.45 --> 00:05:58. are going to be ones that our little bit for the more 00:05:58.27 --> 00:05:59. advanced user. 00:06:00.66 --> 00:06:02. So with image quality, we talked a little bit about 00:06:02.66 --> 00:06:05. this before. I recommend raw for all you more serious 00:06:05.34 --> 00:06:07. shooters. If you don't have the software in place 00:06:07.92 --> 00:06:09. where you want to shoot j pick, I would recommend 00:06:09.66 --> 00:06:13. l f for large, fine quality. J peg in here is also 00:06:13.94 --> 00:06:17. a sub menu for the movie settee, and this is where 00:06:17.32 --> 00:06:20. most people are going to want to shoot in f h d, which 00:06:20.06 --> 00:06:23. is full high definition at a frame rate of thirty 00:06:23.12 --> 00:06:25. frames per second. That's. Kind of your standard video. 00:06:26.36 --> 00:06:29. There are some pie in cinematographers who might want 00:06:29.49 --> 00:06:32. to be shooting in sixty p for a variety of reasons 00:06:32.7 --> 00:06:35. that we're not going to get into right now. But there's, 00:06:35.96 --> 00:06:39. because that option in there, and so everything else, 00:06:39.57 --> 00:06:42. is going to be much lower resolution. And you're probably 00:06:42.23 --> 00:06:44. not gonna want that unless you're doing something 00:06:44.46 --> 00:06:45. very, very specific with that. 00:06:48.62 --> 00:06:50. Image aspect. We've seen this before in the super 00:06:50.85 --> 00:06:53. control panel, controlling the different shapes of 00:06:53.74 --> 00:06:57. the images that you're getting in. So in here, we 00:06:57.87 --> 00:07:00. have our obvious different options in here. The vertical 00:07:00.91 --> 00:07:02. three by four. I think it's, kind of one of the more 00:07:02.71 --> 00:07:04. unusual ones in there. But normally, you're going 00:07:04.85 --> 00:07:06. to want to leave this on four by three and record 00:07:06.8 --> 00:07:08. all of the information that's coming to the sensor. 00:07:11.83 --> 00:07:14. Next up is our digital tell a converter, and this 00:07:14.37 --> 00:07:17. is kind of a new feature. It's. Not a big deal, but 00:07:17.34 --> 00:07:19. here's what's going on. Okay, so were appointed our 00:07:19.96 --> 00:07:22. camera down the tulip fields, right? Well, the digital 00:07:22.71 --> 00:07:26. tell a converter uses thie small portion of the image 00:07:26.76 --> 00:07:29. in just the middle and blows that ups, which means 00:07:29.53 --> 00:07:33. that you are losing a bunch of pixels and it's, magnifying 00:07:33.51 --> 00:07:36. the image two times and it's doing it digitally in 00:07:36.79 --> 00:07:40. camera. And I can't imagine a lot of scenarios where 00:07:40.39 --> 00:07:43. this would be a good thing to use. If you knew that 00:07:43.61 --> 00:07:46. you were not going to be using the outside area, you 00:07:46.08 --> 00:07:48. just didn't have a lens big enough, and you wanted 00:07:48.86 --> 00:07:51. to see it better in the viewfinder. That would be 00:07:51.23 --> 00:07:53. one reason, but this is the same thing is just taking 00:07:53.4 --> 00:07:56. a normal picture and cropping it. Which why you you 00:07:56.83 --> 00:07:59. always want to be a little skeptical whenever you 00:07:59.84 --> 00:08:03. see the words digital tele converter or digital zoom. 00:08:06.75 --> 00:08:10. Next up we have our drive mode are sequential shooting 00:08:10.59 --> 00:08:13. and this is what we saw also in the super control 00:08:13.92 --> 00:08:15. panel and we still have all our all our options for 00:08:15.99 --> 00:08:18. single to continuous shooting we have our anti shock 00:08:18.95 --> 00:08:22. modes which if you remember is the 00:08:23.58 --> 00:08:25. silent first shutter so it's an electron ic first 00:08:25.95 --> 00:08:28. cut first shuter curtain but it's the normal second 00:08:29.44 --> 00:08:32. shut her curtain and then we have our silent modes 00:08:32.88 --> 00:08:37. where it is the elektronik first and second curtain 00:08:37.78 --> 00:08:41. and one of the things to be aware of is that flash 00:08:41.76 --> 00:08:44. will not work with the elektronik shutter curtains 00:08:45.08 --> 00:08:47. and so if you are trying to combine flash that might 00:08:47.37 --> 00:08:51. be one area where you are not able to use one or the 00:08:51.32 --> 00:08:53. other feature one might kind of blocked the other 00:08:53.1 --> 00:08:53. one out 00:08:55.22 --> 00:08:59. all right next up in here kind of buried in here a 00:08:59.3 --> 00:09:02. little bit is something called time lapse settings 00:09:02.1 --> 00:09:03. and this is where you had set up your camera on a 00:09:03.82 --> 00:09:07. tripod most likely there are exceptions and you would 00:09:07.46 --> 00:09:10. shoot a siri's of photos I usually do these at three 00:09:10.46 --> 00:09:13. hundred frames because three hundred frames in a thirty 00:09:13.51 --> 00:09:16. second video make for a nice ten second clip and this 00:09:16.88 --> 00:09:19. is where you will shoot a picture every little bit 00:09:19.72 --> 00:09:22. of time maybe five or ten or fifteen seconds and then 00:09:22.68 --> 00:09:25. combine the rest of the images into a time lapse footage 00:09:25.61 --> 00:09:28. so let's take a look at a quick little time lapse 00:09:28.02 --> 00:09:31. I shot this up in mount hood last winter on the frozen 00:09:31.3 --> 00:09:34. lake. Nearby had the camera on a slider so that's, 00:09:34.62 --> 00:09:38. a separate item not supplied with camera, and so that's 00:09:38.66 --> 00:09:41. a time lapse image. And so here's, another one from 00:09:41.22 --> 00:09:44. india, this one's just off of a tripod. And I'm doing 00:09:44.04 --> 00:09:47. a little bit of that zoom back and that's done in 00:09:47.32 --> 00:09:49. post. So that was in a video at eighteen program that 00:09:49.78 --> 00:09:50. I was doing that. 00:09:51.78 --> 00:09:54. And so when you are in this mode, you would define 00:09:54.2 --> 00:09:56. how many frames you want to shoot. When do you want 00:09:56.48 --> 00:09:58. to start shooting the first frame? What's the difference 00:09:58.48 --> 00:10:01. between each of the frames and whether you want the camera to finish off the video for you? Or do you want to just take the raw images and work with them on your own? And so that's? What the time lapse movie option is if you want to turn that on its going to create a video for you. All right. And that is our first section of the menu. And you might think that we're one fifth of the way done. But we're not there's. Lots more to come.

I had previously purchased the Fast Start for the earlier OM-D E-M5 model and found it invaluable. I was lucky to catch this E-M5 Mark II Fast Start when it was live and had my camera set up beautifully - until I updated the firmware recently and discovered how uncooperative the camera can be in the absence of the combination of settings recommended by John. So I bought the course, which enabled me to restore the camera to the optimal settings and gave me may "Aha" and light-bulb moments about things I'd forgotten or not understood the first time around. I am glad I now have this course so I can revisit it as needed. NOTE: There IS an option to save settings to the PC before updating firmware. I will be doing that in future!

Excellent course. John's ability to patiently and throughly cover all elements of this detailed camera is impressive. He converts the stress level of learning a new camera to a fun level.

I watched most of the live broadcast and just finished going through all of the modules with my camera. I learned so much!! My camera is customized to my preferences and I am now very comfortable shooting in M mode. My picture quality has already improved. John is an excellent instructor.
