Playback Menu

Alright, next up is the Playback Menu. You can use your camera to do slideshows, like if you're gonna hook it up to a TV. You can plug it into an HDMI, and do a slideshow, and this will give you some parameters for how to control your slideshow. I'm not gonna spend a lot of time on this. Although, if you do wanna just... If you want a really kicky music, go into the background music in here, the prerecorded sounds that they have for background music. You're going to feel like you're in an elevator, trust me. Or from a very cheesy 80s video. So in here you can choose which images you're going to see, how much interval between them, whether you're gonna look at the movies and so forth, and so if you wanna do a little slideshow from the camera, control it from here. Next up. If you need to rotate images, and the main reason that you would do this is if you are doing a slideshow. Normally the camera will add something into the metadata to let the system know whether it's a horizontal or ve...

rtical, so when you load it into an external program like Light Room, it'll automatically adjust the orientation of the image. But if you wanted to adjust it, you could here. And so, I actually do recommend leaving this turned off, 'cause if you rotate it on, it's gonna take your vertical images, and they're gonna be quite small on the back of the camera to fit that horizontal screen. So I recommend leaving that turned off. It will still be rotated in the computer though. You can edit your images. We edited an image earlier, if you recall when we did the audio narration with the playback image, and so there's a number of things that you can go in here. You can select images for overlays when you are doing the double exposure option. There's a whole thing about plugging your camera into a printer and printing out in the field, and you need a printer that can connect straight up to the camera, but this would give you options on how that and what print gets printed. Reset Protect. So if you have locked your images by pressing that key, the info button, to lock an image, you can Reset Protect all of your images on there so if you were trying to delete a bunch of images, you can just turn off the lock on all of your images very quickly. If you want to copy images from one memory card to the other, so you only have one memory card in the camera, and you want to put in another card and copy over everything that you already have on the first card, you can do that. So, copy from one to two, or two to one. Next up is connection to the smartphone. Alright, so this is where your camera and your phone are communicating, and photos that you shoot in your camera are going to your phone so that you have easy access to send them up to a particular server. So we're gonna do a demo here in just a moment, but let me go through and show you kind of the basics of the process, try to simplify the process. There's a number of things you need to do with your phone, and things to do with the camera. The first thing you need to with your phone is you need to download the Olympus app. Currently, which means this may change in the future. Currently, it's the Olympus Image Share app that you need to have on your phone. Next up, you're gonna need to, on your camera, go basically right here where we are in the menu system, go to "Connection to Smartphone." You are then gonna go back onto your phone. Here we go. Go back onto your phone, make sure your Wi-Fi is turned on, select the camera's Wi-Fi, you'll need to enter the password, at least the first time, and then you can open the camera app. Once the camera app is open, then you can continue playing around on the phone, and you can select the function. The two most common ones would be a remote control so that you can take a picture with the camera in a remote location, and then you can import photos. You can also edit them. You can also add geo tags on the camera. So, leaving this up on screen, I am gonna now try the most dangerous part about today's class, is to hook my camera up onto a Wi-Fi system. And I had a great idea for doing Wi-Fi, but I just thought of it right now. And you know what I wanna do? Is I wanna stick my camera in the refrigerator and see if the light actually goes out when I close the door. With the Wi-Fi on, I'll be able to do that. Okay, so what do we need to do? Menu system. I need to go into the Playback Mode, Connection to the Smartphone. I'm gonna hit, "Okay." Wi-Fi starting. Excellent. Okay, now it's time to onto my phone. Now there is a QR code that you can use to scan in, but I'm gonna do it kinda the manual way. And what I need to do is I need to go into settings, and because I didn't want all of you folks to call me while I was actually doing this class, I have turned on my Do Not Disturb, which I think I'm gonna leave on, so you still can't call me. But I'm gonna take my camera out of the airplane mode. Leave airplane mode on and turn Wi-Fi on. Oh, I'm gonna leave airplane mode on, and so that it leaves that extra stuff. Thank you, Drew. And I'm gonna go into Wi-Fi, and I'm gonna look for a Wi-Fi signal. I gotta turn that on. There we go. Now, I'm gonna look, and CreativeLive has about different Wi-Fi things on here, but I'm gonna be looking for something coming from an Olympus camera. Instructors, South Wing. Oh, my problem is I already did this in test to see if it worked, and so it automatically picked it up, and so normally... You know what? I'm gonna see... I'm gonna forget this network. Forget it. I'm gonna come back and see if it's still sending that signal. And so here it is. This is how the way it would normally come in. You can see it, EM1-Mark II down here. So I'm gonna select that right there. And then I have the lovely task of entering the passcode. So, let's type this in. If you're gonna record this number for stealing my stuff, this changes with every image, or every time you do this. Two, nine, eight, one, oh, five. Eight. One. Oh. Five. Join. It'll take a moment to think about things. They're doing the handshake, and if we get a check mark, we're looking pretty good on there. So now I'm gonna go into the app, which I have a little Wi-Fi camera grouping here, and we want the Olympus Share. I'm gonna forget about geo tags right now, and I'm gonna go into a remote control. And there we are. And I... Drew, would you join me up here by the table, and we'll do a little group shot of us? You on one side, on the end, right over there. You can stay over there. There's how it fits. Make sure that you got the right pose there. And so I'm gonna very discreetly hold the camera like this, but I'm gonna look up here, and... Take the picture there. And so there we go. Nice job, thank you very much. And so that way it can be very handy for doing group shots, and so forth, and so here's what I got on the phone, and... Works out pretty well. Now, if I want to, let's see... I'm gonna go the extra step. I don't know if I can do this right now. I think I turned off... I'm gonna go back... I'm going rogue, folks. I'm totally going rogue here. Do I have Wi-Fi? Wi-Fi on. Want Wi-Fi on. Want that, yes. I am gonna see if I can go back to this... Cancel. Import photos. Okay, so here's all the photos I've been taking during class. Boy, I'm gonna save all of these, that's for sure. Alright, so I want to take that image, and I want to import that image. So it's going from the camera to here. "You may turn off the camera." Um, okay, thank you for that. So if I want to turn off the camera, the camera will shut down. So let me see if I have that photo in my photos collection now. Oh, there it is. Where is it? Down here at the end of the roll. Okay, so there we go. As you can see, you can upload it, or do anything that you want with it at that point. You could just simply post it right there. Okay, I think that's good enough for the demo. I survived that much. We should call it good and not risk anything more on that demo. And so I'm gonna turn the camera off and back on. And so that's the basics of how you get in there, and download an image. I know there's more things that you can do, but that's just enough to get you started, at least for this class there. Alright, so Wi-Fi. Lots of fun. And that completes our Playback Menu.

This is exactly what I was looking for - I really feel like I'm not able to control my camera, rather than the camera controlling me! :) I really learned a great deal - some of it was a great review, some of it was crucial information that will (hopefully) make me a better photographer. Thanks for a great class, John!!

This is a great course on learning about the OM-D E-M1 Mark II. I have watched it many times to get to were I know it by memory the best I can. I like to go over it as much as possible because there is a lot to learn. I do wish that John would do an updated version since now it is up to Firmware 3.1. It is like a whole new camera with the new settings.
