Library Module Overview

I want to show you the library module and the things that it does. A high level view of what you do in the library module. Now, I'm not gonna show you how to do that in this section. We're gonna start with the next section on getting involved in all the nitty gritty. But to sort of give a high level overview, I'm gonna really quickly just dive in and do a bunch of things in the library module. So you go, oh, that's where we're headed. So let's take a look at the library module itself. These are the images that were just imported of Carisa thing with the library module. It's really about picking winners sorting and key wording and that kind of stuff. It's all about the organization. So I can go in here and choose an image just by clicking on it and I can go in here to key wording. I can start keyboarding things. And so I can say this is Carisa and she's a model and she's brunette and she's tall and she's got a dress and I can put all that stuff in there. I can go to this one and say thi...

s is Carisa and notice it, noticed that I already had chris in there and she's brunette knows that and she's uh let's say eyes, something like that. So, we've got all that stuff. This one right here, Maybe I'll say smile. I can start key wording and doing different things to these images. I can start comparing the images to figure out which one I want to choose as my winner. So down here we've got different views. And so to do this, I'm gonna just turn off my my film strips, we have more room to do this. So we've got this little thing here we can compare. And so actually turn on my film strips, you can see how we're comparing. So we've got this one right here, which is this is the one that we think is the winner. Is this one better? And so as we go through here, we can start comparing which one is better. The one on the left or the one on the right. Like okay, I like that one better. And so let's make that one the winner. And now I'm done. So now we can start editing this. So that's one way you can start choosing winners. The other way you can do this is that we can grab all of these. I can hit a shortcut key and make this all very easy. And I can go in and say I don't like that one. This looks too much the same. This one her head is not right. She's got a wonky thing. I've got these two. Okay, I like that one. That's the one that we're going to work on. I can start choosing this different images. So maybe I like this one. And so I'll choose that one by adding a flag. I'll choose this one by adding a flag and maybe this one here. I like the most. And so I'm gonna rate it for stars again. I'm gonna show you all these shortcut keys as we're going through how to do all this stuff again. I'm just giving you a high level view of what this does so that you can understand where we're headed. Okay, so I've got a few things that have happened here. The other thing I can do as I can do really quick develops and so didn't here, I can say you know what, I wanna fix her image. And so right off the bat, you can see that we change this from this yellow we to a more bluish tone. You can do quick edits, we can start sorting things so I can go in here and say I need to see everything that I've flagged and it just says they're the two images that I've flagged or I want to see just the images that I have edited. That's the only one I've edited. It shows up. I want to see any image that's rated four stars. It'll show me that. I can say I want to see any image that um let's see has some text. So let's find any any images that have a smile. And because I've added smile as a keyboard that shows up, I can say show me anything with a dress. Okay there's the dress and that shows up because I have keyword at it. And so we can go in in the or the library module. This is where we start picking winners and adding metadata so that we can find things in the future adding information about our images. So that when we worked with them in the library module and go to the develop module or to the book or whatever, we have some data in there that we can play with on the left hand side of the library module. This helps us understand where those files are. So right now, we're looking at all the photographs, there's only six photos in our library right now, in a little bit, Just a couple sections from now, we're gonna have about files in our library. And so right now it's very obvious what's going on and I did that on purpose. But later we're going to have thousands of files and you'll see how this really comes to light how we can sort and filter things. The other thing we have here underneath this catalogue here we have our folders. So this is a reflection of our physical hard drive. And so you can see here we have the light room hard drive. And then here is that folder that we created Carisa. And if I hover over it, you can see that it shows me the entire path to that. And so we can see on our hard drive where things are stored, like an image browser and we can go straight to those folders on our hard drive and so we can find images that way. The other thing we have our collections. We have an entire section on collections. We will be putting things in collections a lot. Um but they're over on the left hand side. Collections show up in most all of all of the modules use collections. And so well, we have a whole section on that. And the other thing we have are these published services and publish services. Again, we have an entire section on published services and what they do. But this allows us to sink our images with external um services like you're publishing on adobe stock or publishing to a local hard drive, getting things out to an FTP site, something like that. These allow us to sink all those folders. That's what's over here on the left hand side, we also have the ability to import and export that is over here on the left hand side as well. So on the left hand side, it's sort of getting things in where they are stored, getting things out. That's on the left hand side in the middle, it's for seeing organizing, rating, all of that stuff. And over here on the right hand side we're adding key wording, we are adding metadata. We're adding location, things. We are adding descriptions. We're adding all kinds of stuff over here. Maybe we're describing with the title of this images were maybe writing captions. If we're a journalist, we can put all that stuff in here. So this library module allows us to really get a handle all of our images and then add add add metadata and describe things to those images. And then later when we need to find those images, we can do all the filtering and sorting and everything to pull things out. So it's it is the way that we manage all of the images in our catalogue. That's the library module. The first thing we need to do is we need to learn how to get things into the Library module and properly keyword those add copyright information and all of that kind of stuff. We do that with the import workflow. So let's start taking a look at how we automate things and get things in to light room in an intelligent way.

Great class - excellent content, excellent presentation. Thank you Mark, through this class, I finally understand the difference between Adobe Lightroom Classic, Lightroom and how they work together. And how excellent, there is so much more available to learn - photography essentials, lighting, Adobe products.

This is an excellent class to learn about Lightroom Classic. Since it's not the same as Photoshop, I found Lightroom Classic to be confusing and difficult to intuitively figure out. Mark Wallace is an expert and exceptional teacher for the program and I learned so much today in this free class presentation that I am planning to purchase the program so I can continue to have a solid understanding of Lightroom Classic basics. Thanks, Mark, for inspiring me to get back into computer photo editing with LR Classic!
