Your Business Support Team: Assistants You Can Trust

let's talk about assistance that you can trust now and I'm not talking about this is not the friends this is the assistant this is the person that uh like that knucklehead over in the corner who came in a little while ago and said I need your cf card where's your cf card oh yeah thanks donna forgot totally forgot about he needed myself card uh my my my business partner in my workshop business rob hole is in dallas and rob rob is a great photographer he's a great business man and he's a great workshop leader himself long before we ever got together uh but he's he's assisted me for five years at this thing I do call the texas school that people teach at uh and the thing is about people like robin people like john they think ahead of you about a third or a half of a step right so they know what you're going to do and they know what you need next and as I say hey john can use I got from the meter hey can you lower that I've already moved the big light okay it's like they were with me were ...

all in tune and that's so important because it makes you look like a million dollars in front of a client it keeps you from forgetting things when you're spaceiy because we listened we all get in a zone don't we don't we get a little bit spacey or is it just me we do we get spacey sometimes we get a little forgetful and things it's like oh wait where's my can you figure out work yeah it's over here I got it I will take care of it okay thanks that's what they do so develop a relationship there was there was an assistant and for those of you that are wanting to become assistance that are out there listening listen to this this this was great where this guy in san diego that his nickname was the gofer that was his hate when you ask you hey what's the name of the gofer oh you're the gofer I'm the gofer he put together a flyer of himself it was a full length picture of himself just standing smiling wearing a pair of jeans a nice pair of white sneakers a nice button down collar shirt that we is pressed but a comfortable pair of jeans and a smile on his face and his hair was combed and he had this thing made up and it had these little call out and it said smile and I smile to be pleasant to your clients another call that with an arrow going to his arm strong arms to lift those heavy power packs and then down here on this side you know nimble legs to make those fast lab runs and sneakers so I can run back and get something you forgot in the car I mean this guy was so smart and it he had a business of being the go for he didn't want to be a photographer he knew photography he would have gone a photo school but he knew he wanted to be an assistant and he was the best one I've ever seen and he wouldn't work with anybody worried for anybody full time he was on ly available freelance and you couldn't hire him for more than two days in a row ever because he wanted at least three different people to work with every week I think it was brilliant there's a guy appear like that to there's a guy appear that gregory heisler always talks about that he was from seattle sherman was his name frank frank sherman maybe how I'll dig it up in a minute it's been a long time since I've talked about anyway but greg heisler knows assistance appear like that there are assistance all around the country that all they wanna do is be great great assistance and I'm telling you they're so valuable so that you can find them they'll save your business so for a lot of people starting out the idea of getting an assistant is is quite scary yeah um how do you when do you think you're ready for an assistant or at what point is a good time tio think about getting an assistant or she just be bringing your friend over you know what what's your advice in terms of when you're starting out I think that that as you are new to this uh you're probably not ready for hiring and paying an assistant but even if you're new to this I think you might be ready to bring on a student photo student intern type person that can sit there and and a lot of interns that are in school still will come with you on shoots and not expect to be paid they just want to learn from you and you need help from them so it's kind of a you know you wash my back I'll wash your back uh I think that I think that from a business standpoint I think there's gonna come a time now most assistance and and its various from city the city and it varies from country to country on a day rate or a a fee to pay a good assistant uh most good assistance in most average cities can make about two hundred fifty dollars a day now in some cities larger cities they cost a little bit more and if they're highly qualified and work for you a lot and you are a high end photographer making a lot more day rate money you might pay them for five six hundred dollars today is its it kind of depends and a smaller city you know if you're in the smaller community you might pay him one hundred fifty for two hundred it depends on kind of what you're doing if you're a portrait photographer most portrait photographers don't hire an assistant for a day shoot they just can't afford it because the session fee for most portrait photographers air probably around that or less even so it makes it very very difficult for a portrait studio to use a systems but portrait studio certainly can use in terms and listen when I had my studio I had no problem calling my local high school and saying I need two of your best photo students to help me with a project this next weekend and I can pay him a little bit I can't pay him a lot but I can promise him all the pizza they can eat and I promise I will tell them and teach them like crazy if I can have him I had a line up of people interview so their ear and they're out there go to your high schools go to your community colleges and go to your local colleges that have photographic program in the arts department or in the science department most most photography falls into the arts but sometimes in some cities it falls in the science as well so uh but I think that that there's there certainly is outlets to find him and a good valuable assistant like that man you they will find and watch for the small things that you miss like john saved me twice yesterday and I'm not gonna point him out because you know but he saved me twice yesterday

Another great course by Tony Corbell. I loved this course. Tony is a great teacher, great photographer and great business man. He's enjoyable to listen to and a great teacher. He holds nothing back and shows how to shoot great pictures even in small shooting environments or on a low budget. I would buy again Tony's courses.

Wow! Tony is fantastic! So many hints and tips, crammed into this great course. I shoot portraits out of a small converted garage, about 9 ft high, 9 feet wide, and about 19 feet long. Tony has shown me so many ways to make this small space work for me, for which I am eternally grateful. What this course highlights is that whatever small space you have, there are ways of making it work. You need to buy this course and watch it over and over because, every time I watch it, I gain more and more info that I missed the first time around. Brilliant!

Absolutely wonderful, I cannot praise the content enough. I value Tony's stories as much as the information he is giving away, because it puts the data in the perspective and practical context of the actions we take. Thank you for this class!
