The Release Phase
First stage of the flow cycle is a struggle phase. The second phase is a release phase. In struggle, you are thinking, thinking, thinking, thinking, thinking. Release, you are taking your mind off the problem. You are, we're gonna talk about how to do that in a second, what we're actually talking about, but you are literally going to stop thinking about all the thing that you've been focusing on all along. When we do that our brainwaves shift. They go from high beta, which is where we are when we 're in struggle, down to alpha. You also get a global release in the body of a chemical called nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is a gaseous signaling molecule. It is everywhere in the body. It's also what Viagra or any of those medications do, they pump you full of nitrous oxide and, among other things. Improves your libido and your, nevermind. (laughs) When there's this global release of nitric oxide in the body, what happens is that nitric oxide pushes the stress hormones out of your system. It f...
lushes norepinephrine and cortisol out of your system and replaces them with positive, feel-good neural chemicals, like dopamine, serotonin, anandamine, and endorphins. So, anybody who's familiar with my story knows that I got into this work because I ended up curing myself of Lyme Disease with surfing, with flow. And I I couldn't figure out, like how the hell do you cure a chronic autoimmune condition? With surfing it doesn't make any frickin' sense at all. Turns out, autoimmune conditions basically means your nervous system has gone haywire. You don't know where normal is. After I had been sick for a couple of months, forget the couple of years, I had no idea where normal was. I couldn't even find it. But getting into flow resets your nervous system to normal, flushes the stress hormones out. Herbert Benson, who's the Harvard cardiologist, who mapped a lot of the in, the flow cycle [Inaudible 00:02:06]. He believes that most so called cases of spontaneous healing are actually flow states. And it's primarily because of what nitric oxide does and how it resets the nervous system. So, the second stage of the flow cycle, struggle release. This, by the way, this may look familiar to people, so this is the creative cycle. This is the cycle of creativity. It's another map and a model. This is, we've known this since the 40s and 50s. This may look very familiar. It maps directly out of the flow cycle. Preparation. Struggle. Incubation is what happens in release. Illumination is the flow state itself. And verification, the final, we call it recovery. But this is, this the map of the creative process.
