Student Shoot: Ice Queen

First what we have is our ice queen shoot here and this is the headpiece we're speaking about before. Um this's specialty makeup did you actually purchase days todo about this it's ice makeup kit I found online I think it was like six dollars okay, yeah, I found it online this's rachel on from model mayhem I'll put a link on my website to find rachel cool and website blogged or facebook it's julie ray photography dot com okay julie rea photography dot com awesome um and so what are you thinking for your crop and what did you kind of want as a look for this picture? Um I wanted a cold feeling um I'm I'm just pretty much going to shoot her from here up and maybe some close head shots so I get the dramatic makeup this this piece is so intricate that I wanted I wanted simplicity, but we have the back of back lit blue with blue gel so doing to start sure you construction take shots and don't shoot too quickly because you are tethered oh, I'm just gonna talk about the lighting that we have h...

ere right now. Our main light is a beauty did she didn't want it to be too soft you wanted to have some shape to the face but she didn't want it to be too dramatic so we have a white twenty two inch beauty dish all the lighting we're using his brown color senso kits today um then she wanted a little bit of definition on the hair since you pop from the background so we have this light right here which is a strip bank um strip light instead of a strip banks it's really, really easy to just tryingto angle it give you just a little bit of highlight um and then the other thing we have is in the silver reflectors over there with blue gels on it and so a single look is it? Let me just make sure everything's working okay, take a look at the images. Okay? Good. All right, so when a couple things when I think of ice queen too that I'm thinking of is likely some of this would be done in photo shop not a lot in order to pull out what I would do is I'd pull out the reds and yellows in her skin tone de saturate that and maybe add I can teach you one on one how to do split toning I would take the shadows and add a blue tint to it so that will give you that whole ice queen field. All right, so let's, take a look at some images you wanna shoot a few more and tell me what you're thinking and what you like changed to donald but castaic look okay so what works for you and what doesn't? I think I don't know if they were expecially expression is maybe more of a feel like something needs to come out in expression wise. You have shirts. So why don't you go first? I'll shoot. One thing I notice is because it's all wait here. I look at the lips and I know the lips have to say close because it's so light when she opens the lips, it becomes again dark spot. And I think I would try some straight on because I'm would play with that symmetry and then maybe have the body not symmetrical. Okay, I think that. Well, try. Try a couple kind of tight there. Do you want her here to be, then that's. You symmetry differently. I would try a couple of shots like that. And I would also just me artistically. I would also I would do some from the profile way out. I would do some straight on. I also went to some of their eyes closed because then it's kind of all right. So I do some tight, like I went to somewhere. I even just do like here, huh? With the eyes closed, so I would try that, but I think looking at this shot there's also may be a little bit too much shadow on that side of the face so if you're going to have a turn away since the beauty dishes on this side if you have returned slightly way it needs to be towards this direction I think we'll probably see what you like if we add some reflectors in here to tell me if you like it better with reflectors school we can hold information on front nice I like that that's beautiful that's much better it is much more so from me because it's such a symmetrical headpiece straight onto you and just really intense is really home can you add the other affected as well? Is that so or some big old next okay, so ideally we'd have silver but it might not mess it up so we're going to do this kind of v beauty like yep long neck was beautiful tune down just a little bit and what lens are you using here I'm losing twenty four two one o five having everybody cannon seventy okay, just so you guys know kind of crop factor in the last choice is right you're using let me take a look at that would you think I like it so I just need to have that down a little bit so for me if you guys and how the tellers working well if you can see it it is kind of filled in white out really really glowing um I got a little bit of hair light on the hair there I would probably it depends on if you want the background to be light or darker we can make it a little bit darker let's try one without the blue gel let's just see what it looks like the same thing I'm gonna move my reflector so it's not in your shot a little bit lower so take a look at those edges and make sure that I'm not in your shots let me just pop off the blue joe and let it go grey for a second just won't take a look see what we liked better ok tell me if I'm in the way no good good so they get better grey or blue slip between the two like blue okay so she takes the blues I'm gonna put that back on I mean it's looked back on uh try we're going to try one this time maybe with chai wan tighter with the ice closed okay um really this just like butt back up in zuman instead like shoe all the way at one o five and then back up are we need teo and then reflector good take a look at that let go on that late didn't get plugged in in our school done kind of halfway out look pretty I'm going to go grab you the signal one fifty macro just for an artistic lynch choice take a look and see if you like that how's it going over here guys everybody happy okay, good rise got one was you look lovely. Okay, so take a few more shots with this and then I'll have you switch lenses and give it a try, okay? Good test this yeah and make sure we're not in your friends and add a little bit blue works. Yeah, okay. Pretty okay, so this is what I want you to try try switching this lens says we're switching to one fifty macro and just try a shot it may or may not work uh where your frame is just kind of her face and her neck try vertical like that. Uh, dig a perfect okay, try vertical where you shoot just like this kind of that area and let's reflect her again and close your eyes and take a look. So take a look. What do you think? Pretty so maybe do a little bit looser we'd get a little bit more on the sides, but I mean, you can play around with it, so I'm gonna let you shoot a little bit and tell what you're thinking and we could switch lens is back again um look down towards this way kind of yeah just like that don't follows him all the way and also tell him so I think I'd have her look a little higher she looks I think it looks no offense a little cross that may be okay for a little bit but I like everything else so okay that same thing um but maybe I'm gonna actually use your fingers when every direct like looking right here maybe you can look at those okay, so probably not as far I probably look a little bit too far but I think you look phenomenal. I think that looks great. So what do you do? You like it? What? Yu thinking what you want change I do but I I don't know why I'm thinking I just I want to show the intricacy of the headdress so try me I do like the close ups school but well, you know what you should do close ups and then okay switching to shoot one more close up and then switch back to the other ones so really find so I'm gonna have you do that but this have look here and then good. Okay, look a little lower, ok? Pretty so okay, so close up. So you switched back to other lands and let's do some more with the headpiece that looks really pretty okay, so um let's try went public clavicles just a little bit like they're just a little bit good kind of peacocking just do some with the hair back you look so beautiful yeah look nice on a lot of times for when I'm doing a shoot I'll have somebody lotion up or like even that juergens shimmer I'm just on the top of the clavicles make pop out when the light catches a little bit more so uh let's do it tracy out of the shot not sure how close we're good and you know horizontal vertical whatever you're threatening us yeah that's beautiful it's really beautiful you know and don't feel free you know you can cop a little bit but okay like yeah that's really nice um let's dio problem was we had over here, huh? Yes. Okay okay friends his brother let's try grab some of her hair oh yeah? Well just a little bit so because you're just kind of pc on that side I don't know mine is like a little more full let's try like your hair's like crazy and she wonders vertical horizontal whatever you want you just gotta hold it or you gonna flap and hold it and then eventually do a flab can another concert we're gonna let go of it if you want to catch it I hold it up higher anyone to three okay, so did you like any of that one that's okay, but I didn't write so aye, we do have a fan but they're using it um can we wait on this oh you mean because they might so all right, so robin knows this drill so the deal here you're gonna phanor about like off where the modern life well, I'm just checking this we're gonna fan her see if this lady is that get sent off to the model lineup. Okay, so the go to wind blowing hair tool that I usually use is a piece of foam core uh and you have somebody flap it and there's definitely an art to this um the key for me forgetting here if up anyway not want it we're just gonna try one on one. What you do is you don't put the hair in front of the shoulders because it gets caught you put it on the shoulders like that and then it blows back easier so you won't work? I mean, we got to kind of catch it. Um that will work best something like we put the hair there. Um what other tips? The other thing that I used for flowing here is a floor dryer. So one of those things that you put like for wet floors because this variable power and you can fluid looks good for the hair so we're going to try here. The key is to not do what I've done and hit the lights your flapping you like and knock your two thousand dollar light all around that's always fun oh, and then of course the like serious way of doing here which he has here let's do let's do one or two of these just so you can see what it looks like you're already good at their ok again and you get uh okay, nice. See if he pops up again good keeper clavicle is good tell me when you go I'm from this light no, I don't see the hair below we know and really hard, okay and I might try one more time I'm gonna do one flew. Okay, what? I'm s apparent very easy that ready? Okay, I'm going to dio ready one. All right, let me go down there we go so down is better and out again you go up and down charity don't mister, you just click when you see it ready set to look like don't explode but I mean that's really pretty really like that because if you picture that shot but then you pull out all the color of her skin it goes white so I think those air cool I don't think straight straight on maybe just turn your body a little bit I think maybe away from the light because if I turn it towards the light that's going to light up her chest too much, so I turned her away I'm going to keep it a little bit more in shadow he pulled the color out so let's try a couple more of those I like the neck out again. All right, let's, try try the hair here. Uh, okay, maybe it'll not quite as far to the side just a little bit the great they're trying to hit you with this board here we go. Okay. Are you ready to get on with your good eye? Six let's check lee's so it looks like she's blown in the wind and snow storm so I think those look cool because it looks like literally she's fighting against the snowstorm. We're going to try the hope this's if if you want to invest in an actual fan for hair. Um, this is which company makes us a jet stream with bowmans? Okay says bowen's um, so we're going to give this a try with an actual hair blower machine internal oh, yeah. Anyway, freeze. Okay, we'll call that that's just blown his blue. I want to hurt you. Okay, so go ahead. What you're gonna say no, I want her to use. Okay, so we'll do something what's maybe up there good soft fingers ok, sorry ok thing what's it freaking out about she may be on a sure thing, so I am okay no, as I like that, I think that's nice, but I don't want the hair right here. Yeah, agreed, and then the fingers are so ok. Yeah, for your fingers. Um, just a little softer, maybe maybe like to see this side of the hand. So if you put this hand up, yeah, until it was just kind of like they're a little bit try that and you want more fluffy here, d'oh. Hell, fluffy goes. Okay, all right, so I'm gonna leave you to shoot, okay? I'm gonna move to our next set. So okay, okay, whatever you want, you're welcome and feel free. Robin will help you with your focus and computer. Keep working. I don't know for sound. They want that turned off or not. You should. We might have a multiple flapping. What not. Okay, great job. I think they even just look really, really good. I'll show you how to photoshopped it later. Perfect.

I have watched at least half a dozen Creative Live courses and this was definitely one of the most interesting and informative of them. Lindsay showed her wealth of knowledge in lighting, posing, post processing and marketing. I was truly impressed with her level of comfort in each field. She tackled different situations and questions with ease. I really liked the course layout as well. She shot her own themed shoots and explained them. Then she helped each student with their own very different styled shoots. It looked like a lot of fun and a great way to learn too. Then at the end Lindsay had a fun little light painting session. WELL DONE LINDSAY AND CREATIVE LIVE!!! ;-)

I'm an artist and amateur photographer who has long been interested in the subject of fashion photography and how to incorporate it into my art. Lindsay impressed me with her depth of knowledge and her comprehensive and selfless method of presentation. Showing before and afters to illustrate technical differences was particularly helpful to me, as was seeing her explain the importance of concept and story. Posing, glowing skin, and lens flare techniques were also a treat to witness and learn from her. Her passion for the subject is tangible, and left me more excited about the potential for my own work. The sheer volume of information Lindsay shares in this workshop is tremendous, from idea to the shoot to post-production, and certainly worth the investment I made in my career. Thanks to Lindsay and thanks to Creative Live.
