Find Your Following

All right, so finding you're following we talked a little bit about this in terms of the thing outreach but here are some definite tools for reaching out to them the first one is the platform so the social platforms that you khun connect with people on but then remember that the work that you're doing this is more we talked about we're talking about display these air ways that you can show your work and connect with people by showing them work. So we have the print editorial layouts in a magazine um fashion shows event driven films more and more they're online people are using that as a way to show their work and then installations like museum or gallery installations if your think about your fashion in those terms you can share with people very unique things. So for instance, the fashion show is a spectacle right it's about theater I just actually heard I can't remember where but there was a fashion show for cause play right? I can't remember the name of their company but she did this...

great show and she's doing clothing based on cause play so just for every day and I just thought that was amazing because the theatrical experience was great but you connected with the clothes on a different level and then with films this could be great for that that very simple garment that's all about the special hidden things we talked a little bit about, you know, picking these little details and maybe doing things inside the garment that only the customer knows about. I saw this great video where it was all this woman getting dressed and it was beautiful there was sun streaming through the window and she had it was like she was getting ready for work and she put things on and the camera work was amazing. You know, it was all about the stock nous of the fabric and the beauty of the buttons and how it was made and you wouldn't see that coming down the runway and even in the final one the installation you might not see that if it was displayed on a mannequin so that's a useful tool that's becoming easier and easier to avail yourself up you know that you can use because waken all do it now and and then installations this is I call it the study mode because you can actually study a garment you know, on display you can walk around it, you can look at the details and really spend some quality time with it all right? And when we talk about platforms we talked about social media platforms and I just have a couple of examples here I isaac mizrahi is probably one of the most fun designers around and one of the things that I really like about his approach is that it's not just about selling the clothes it's about everything associated with this lifestyle that he's created so some of you might be familiar with the dvd of one of his fashion shows and it captures that whole process so he's sharing with you that process of what he goes through not to put it just put out a collection but to do a show and and it ends with him I'm sort of going to the new stand to see the reviews this is a really, really process if that insider behind the curtain kind of feeling so he realized the importance of that how books howto have style so formulas you you're empowering your customer with information that you have and then just for fun this I just that was brilliant it's actually a collector's set of three comic books with his star muse and you know you get to see the fashion but you get to again approach a whole different audience and its spawn and his people he is also has a cabaret act he had a tv show where he would you know, interview people again all about lifestyle and then incorporate fashion I have a question about that because obviously he has sort of, you know, a bigger brand a big audience and so he's able to kind of do some of those things which could be intimidating for sort of people starting what are some of those elements like behind the scenes is something that people of that reality what are some things that all of us could be doing to start showing that behind the scene we'll have one of these right our phones I have with my students for social media one of the things I'm trying to help them do some of them do it automatically because some people are really savvy but thinking about being your own uh documentarian you know like you're saying I'm taking on this project and I'm going to snap pictures of my process so that they see the muslin they see the flat pattern and then they see the garment then they see the customer in the garment maybe the customer sends you a picture of them at an event in the garment and you have a story you can do that with videos too you know like uh tools like periscope and things like that where you could do little little snippets that allow people insight into your experience and it could be very simple very personal it doesn't have to be super polished often because it's real in real time before many of these tools so I would encourage you to think about like you we take it for granted you know that we do all these steps but the minute you see them and can share with them they feel like they're on the journey with you and it's great because you get feedback and people then when people see finished work or your announce an event they built even if it's just virtual online you've built this relationship with um so yeah um I was just going to say one at one of the places that I love to look for inspiration it's not necessarily even for costuming or this for inspiration is I love to look at places like india, gogo and key kickstarter nope interested of course, but the two indiegogo on kickstarter where people are actually trying to build business and a lot of times you can see the process that they go that route that's part of the perks where they share with you right? Right and I have found that really informative to find out how they struggle or what their success is our and then monetarily you khun look to see you know exactly are they on the right course our people backing them it's a great a great example because especially about that aspect of our people connecting with it you know, because you want to ask yourself would I back that project and the same thing comes from what you're sharing online even though your process not necessarily backing you but saying would I go to that person's fashion show? You mean or would I go to that person to order a dress? Um uh get again just examples of the different processes so the runway experience we talked about films on a flip side not just making your own films but you should kind of study what's out there there's this huge influx of fashion documentaries which are amazing and a lot of them are available like you know, a netflix and things like that um and then the exhibits this is viktor and rolf att the m f a in boston and I these all these americans were positions so that you can walk around them three sixty and there's so much incredible detail you know have some close ups and the long shots but you you can really spend time with them all right? Um just very quickly we'll run through these what social media platforms is your customer on do they do pinterest are they just do they just tweet because not everybody I mean they may be on everything but which ones they really active on um what's one of her favorite websites and this could be a question you know that you pose online to actually find out you know, like what's the question that everybody I mean the website that everybody goes to and you could make it more specific for this you know, for evening where um what prince print magazines that does she purchased you know? They say print is dead but you know, magazines are very important part of fashion and they're becoming more and more about the imagery and collecting magazine you know, they're not as disposable, they're they're becoming less disposable. Does she go to fashion shows? Is this something that she would actually do? Go and sit, you know, and watch a fashion show? Because not everybody that's, not everybody's cup of tea, how do you think she'd respond to a fashion film? I guess after from your from your experiences, what kind of fashion films do you respond to? And how do you think she'd respond to a fashion installation so again, putting yourself out there and in their head about how they would respond to it because we could have the best of intentions and be very creative and thinking, wow, I did something great, but how would your customer respond? And also a mackenzie you brought up that you were kind of your own customer, you know, your target audience? Not everybody has that same for some people it's somebody very, very different from themselves, so getting into that place is very, very key for you. You can say, what do I like? And then I'm going to have a following based on that, but for someone else you want to say, who am I serving, and how am I improving, whatever it is that they're doing?

Jay is a rare gem in the world of instructors. He has the perfect balance of information, examples, and hands on visuals. He included his students in the teaching process. They were not just the audience. Even the viewers were encouraged to participate! I loved his teaching style and enthusiasm as well as the content of information he shared with us. He covered a vast amount of information and led us at a pace that was very easy to follow. It reaffirmed my love of fashion as well as designing new ideas. This class was inspiring and motivating. If you are even the slightest bit curious about Fashion Design, constructing patterns, or even drawing models, this class is for you. It was all encompassing for an overview of Fashion Design from start to finish. Jay has an easygoing manner that you will want to watch him again and again. A great resource for your library. I can't wait to see him again in the Creative Live classroom!. Good luck to Jay and all his endeavors! Thank you Creative Live for providing yet another great learning opportunity for an international audience.

This is day one of Jays class and I am already hooked and purchased this class. Jay is an awesome instructor. He explains everything in easy to understand terms. He explained things that I have bought books to learn and didn't in one easy lesson. I recommend this class for anyone that has a interest in Fashion design or even learning to draw models for anything you need to sketch out. I hope Creative Live will bring Jay back for more classes. Jay is a instructor also worth having in your tool box of CL classes to refer back to for learning and inspiration! Thank You Jay for sharing your knowledge with us!!

I agree with everything that michelle-b said in her review of this class, and will add that I can tell that he is an instructor who not only knows his subject matter, but has excellent teaching skills. He is very engaged with his students, and focused on making sure that they get what he is telling/showing them. He also has the rare gift of distilling a complex subject down to its essence and teaching it in a simplified form that gives the student a good overview of the basics, and somehow also gives the student insight into more of the subject’s depth than he actually says in words. This broader understanding of the subject empowers the student to proceed on a much higher level than would be possible after taking any other course overview. Even more amazing is that the lessons covered in this way could be (and are) full courses in themselves elsewhere, but were merely segments of this two-day CL class. For this reason, if I ever got a chance to take one of Jay’s classes at the School of Fashion Design, I would take it in an instant. I too bought this class by the end of Day 1. For me, the segments on sketching and drafting alone were worth the $69, and the rest is bonus.
