Video Workflow Overview

So we've been talking about how Resolve does pretty much all of the major steps for post-production. And because Resolve does so many different things, it's broken up into categories called Pages. So here's kind of the post-production workflow. We start with media management, importing and organizing our media, and then we go into editing. From a rough edit all the way to a beautiful cut that we really, really love. And then generally we'll do visual effects and any kind of compositing or graphics, fancy things. And after those are done, we'll go into color grading and audio mixing. And then finally, to rendering the final product. Now like I've said, you don't necessarily have to do in that specific order. That's just kind of how it's been done for a long time. At the bottom of the Resolve interface, there are seven buttons. And each of these buttons corresponds to a specific job in post-production. So you do media management inside of the media page. You do editing inside of the edit...

or the cut pages. You do effects and graphics inside of Fusion, you do color inside of color, and audio inside of Fairlight, and rendering in the Deliver page. And so it's really set up to kind of bring you through the entire post-production process. And you'll find these pages laid out at the very bottom of the interface, and they have these little icons, and there's an icon for media, cut, edit, Fusion, color, Fairlight, and Deliver. And every time that you switch to a new page, the interface completely changes. It's kind of the same idea of moving to a different app, but it doesn't actually open up a different app. It's pretty much just transforming Resolve into edit mode, or into color mode. And it's actually even a lot more than just switching the interface. It really uses kind of a different core processing power for each job. And here's what's really cool about the pages, is that they all share the same timeline. So if I make a timeline on the edit page, that will all also show up on the cut page, and the color page, and the Fairlight page. All of the pages use the exact same timeline. They're just kind of working within their strengths, which I think is just a really good way for teamwork to happen. It's like you have a whole team behind ya. (giggles) So really what you have inside of Resolve is unlimited potential. You can just stay inside of the edit page and make a basic edit here and never leave, or you can go in and do super advanced, crazy effects inside of the Fusion page. You could dive in deep with color and just be a color expert right inside of the color page. You can get super detailed with your audio and be a mix master inside of the Fairlight page. And all of this is available inside of the free version of Resolve, which is really cool. So we're gonna jump into each page in detail in the coming lessons, and I'm excited to explore right with you.

I'm glad to see the DaVinci Resolve courses have been added to Creative Live. Casey Faris does a great job with his teaching. In this course he clearly explains the layout of each page and shares example workflows for each. It's really good as an intro to Resolve.

Helpful class if you are interested in DaVinci Resolve. Casey Faris presents the information clearly and doesn't waste time. Looking forward to his Color Correction and Fusion classes.
