Media Page: Basic Workflow
So let's take a look at how you might practically use the media page. I'll just get rid of this footage here for a minute. And let's say that we want to make a video about this artist. Well, we would go up to the media storage and find the clips of our artists working and drag them in to our media pool, and that's kind of the first step. After that, it's really time to get organized. And this is kind of up to you about how much you want to get organized. If it's just a few shots, maybe you don't really wanna do anything. But what I like to do sometimes is just double click on each shot and open up our metadata. I'll just close the inspector here so we have a big metadata panel here. And we can start typing in descriptions, or different properties, different keywords, things that we want to kind of organize our media by. So what we might do is double click on a shot and maybe here under angle, we can type wide. And then on this second angle, this one let's say is a medium shot. I'll jus...
t type MS. And we can kind of go through each one and kind of categorize it that way. I could also do something like type in a description. So working with the ruler on the paper. This one artist walks into studio. And again, really the sky is the limit here of how detailed you want to get. Maybe during this video, she's talking about how her sister is a designer. We can bring in a shot right here of her sister and we can add that to a bin. So we can right click over here and say new bin and we'll call this B-roll. And I can just drag that into our B-roll. And again, any shot that we import, we can go in and add our metadata too so that we can stay organized later. And once we have all of these things kind of laid out, in the other pages we can go in and kind of look at some of that data, we can sort things by some of that data, and it just makes things a little bit easier especially if you have a lot of footage in an edit. You can even organize things right here in the media pool. If we go to list view, which is up here, kind of in the upper right little bar here above our media pool, we can click on list view. And we can see a lot of the information here just kind of laid out for each clip. We can even right click here in the header and show the various kind of pieces of metadata so I can turn on description and kind of open that up so that we can easily see the description next to our clips. If there are certain things that I don't want to show, I can again right click and just uncheck what I don't really care about. So maybe I don't care about flags, or format, or frames, or file path, or real name. And I can really kind of customize this layout to be useful to me. But that's kind of the general workflow of grabbing a piece of media, bringing it into the media pool, adding metadata to your clips, and organizing them accordingly so that it's really useful later.

I'm glad to see the DaVinci Resolve courses have been added to Creative Live. Casey Faris does a great job with his teaching. In this course he clearly explains the layout of each page and shares example workflows for each. It's really good as an intro to Resolve.
