Class Introduction: Project Overview

We're gonna have some fun today, and we are going to be learning the basics of InDesign while we create a well-formatted resume. So, what does that mean, the basics of InDesign? Well, we're going to be learning how to combine images with texts, and we're going to be formatting all of that to create a really clear hierarchy in our resume design. So, this is not a project for a word processor, which is what a lot of people end up building their resumes in. So, that's why we're gonna be here using InDesign, because really, that's the best tool for the job. And when we're finished, we're going to have a beautiful, clean, easy-to-read resume that is gonna to help you get the job. So, what does it mean to design a resume? Well, design is the clear and logical arrangement of information. You will notice there's a word that we didn't use in there, and that is decorate. We're not going to decorate your resumes. So, if you are somehow hoping for that, I'm sorry to disappoint, but we won't be dec...

orating today. We are going to be building a resume for a fictitious person, and a fictitious job, which is going to be a Director of Social Strategy, at who knows where. So, she's applying for this job; her name is Vanessa Jones, and what that means and why it matters, why bother actually making a real fictitious person (laughs) is because this resume is going to contain real text, which is, I think, especially useful, because that means you can actually learn not only what we're doing in InDesign, but you can actually study the word choice and the verbiage that's in that text, too. So, you can get some additional insights about translating your accomplishments... Translating your responsibilities into accomplishments, and learning how to use action verbs. So, that's what we'll be doing with real text. As a bonus, you will get all of the finished files for the resume, but also, I threw in a cover letter, because that's part of it, basically, (laughs) right? So, if you're going to be sending a resume, you're usually also sending a cover letter, which also has real text. So, those are real words you can edit and change that as needed to suit your purposes. And, also, I've included in bonus materials a note card, which can double as a thank you card. This is so important. If you are not sending thank you notes for any interviews that you get, and the people who make connections for you and help open doors for you, then getting the job might not be your biggest (laughs) challenge. That might not be your biggest problem. So, it's really important to send thank you notes. That could be a whole other class. Fun fact, side note, is that one thank you note, I'm a big believer in those kind of thank you notes, one that I sent actually led to my first book deal. So, you never know what's gonna come from a thank you note. So, as well as this list of resources. So what does that mean? In this project, we're gonna be using a couple of different fonts, and of course, you can use any font that you want, but if you want to use the same fonts, and you want the InDesign files to work exactly as are on your system, then you'd want to get the fonts that I'm using. And, there's links to them in the Resume Resources as well as some links to help you build better bullet points for different responsibilities that you've had and turning those into accomplishments. There's links to tools like Word Cloud Generator to help you target your cover letter and your resume, and tips, and all kinds of things. So, those kind of bonus goodies. All of those items are there in the Bonus Items. And, of course, I would love for you to say hello to me. And, let me know what you make with this, with your resume, what you do with it, and what happens with it.

Fantastic class! I just happened to need my resume updated and I wanted to learn a bit about Adobe InDesign. This was perfect! Khara explains everything clearly and concisely. An absolute beginner could pick these skills up easily. Highly recommend this course.....and you get a fantastic looking resume out of it :)

It's a nice beginner course, pacing is for a complete beginner! For me personaly it had not new information available. I don't think the course is a complete resumé design course. Because you need many more examples and types of resumés for different markets/styles. For people who just migrate from a program like word and just bought InDesign its a nice intro with a nice teacher. The projectfiles are included.

That was a great course. It went peachy until the very end, when I attempted to create the hyperlink to LinkedIn, and InDesign kept telling me that the link was not good. But I still created a pdf and asked someone to test the link, and there we go, it DID work. Stress and research for nothing haha! What is great is that on Word my CV took two full pages and I couldn't work around that. I managed to fit everything in one thanks to this course.
