Workshop with Lisa Alvarez

I would like to have one person put their hand up, and I would like to help you with one challenge, and then we're going to go to our guest, Debbie Millman. So there is a woman named Lisa. Where are you? Lisa is your last name? Alvarez? No, it isn't judging it all, Lisa, Uh, a producer, Nicole, who may have been in touch with you. Um, we selected Lisa randomly. And I want to know if there's one thing that I can help you about designing in real time here about designing what it is that you're going to do in the next chapter when you leave this room. So can you come up here just for five minutes? Everybody ran about possible, Lisa. Okay. Thank you very much for doing this. Thank you. Well, thank you. Okay, So we talked about imagining, and if I remember, you had some, uh, You knew what you wanted to do. Is that accurate? I think so. Yeah. Can you share? Yeah. I'd like to be a professional nature photographer, which I do as a hobby. Graham. See, this is a progression, right? What? What? P...

rior to picking up as a hobby. What? What were some other hobbies? What led to you deciding that you wanted to be a hobbyist nature photographer? Well, first, I actually, um my husband got me a camera for Christmas. And then why did you get what did you get your camera? I wanted one. I did ask And that. Why did you ask? Because, um, I admired some photos that my brother was taking with a similar camera. And it was It actually was a picture of a flower that he had took. And I really like the color. And that appealed to me. How long ago was that? Before you ask for the camera? Um, you mean, when did how long ago? When I got there When I asked. You saw the picture before you asked for the camera. Right? Right. Was it the next day, or was it two years, or was it five years Rash? Probably couple of months. You see, these things take time. Everybody wants to know everything right away. And we're two seconds into talking to Lisa and we realize that she didn't even know what she wanted to do. She saw a picture and then she waited a couple of months and she said, You know what was happening? She had this intuition. She had a feeling this was not like I'm going to wait three months and then I will decide what to do. If you ever wonder how important this inch that this intuition is, I can do this with every single one of you and every single one of you will not be a rational decision. It will be a heart decision. And this is why I'm telling right now that the scientists among us they actually acknowledging the intuition is a thing yourselves. Store information in your body. Your brain is an organ. It's helpful. But right now I know what my leg on the pants on my pants feel like. I can feel it if I pay attention to it, but I don't pay attention to it. But my body is. My brain's up here. It's doing the things that brains do. But I'm getting data in all the time, and your intuition is your body and your minds understanding of that data over time. So trust your intuition, it's what got you your camera. And then you became a hobbyist and then tell us what's what's your plan now? So, um, my plan now? I guess I need to increase the number of days that I actually go out and take photos. That's a big thing. What's keeping it was keeping finding locations that I can get to in a reasonable period of time. Can I Can I inject one thought? Yes, it's actually time is the thing, right? Time is your constraint. So when you're saying it's locations and you're saying is it's actually not a priority for you. Um, well, I do go places like I goto workshops. And what did you see? A little pivot there. You know, I'm actually taking pictures. I do take it. It's fine. And this is why it is that why it's called the hot seat, right? Because they thank you for sharing yourself. But the cool thing is, is that we're all like this on the same exact way. I'm standing up here pretending like I know it all in the same exact way. I have the same stories that I tell ourselves. So now that you are making it a priority, what are you gonna go going to do differently? Well, what I'm gonna do differently is instead of sitting with my IPad and like, researching every potential place in the Sacramento Valley, which is where I live. Thank you for traveling to come here. That was the funny part. Um, e could actually go to those places. And so I've got a great list. I'm a good player. Great. I'm very good at playing. So remember the personality Trade of Planner? Yes, it wasn't. It wasn't actually one. But just see yourself. I'm gonna tell you one of the thing you like. I love that you've researched it, and now you're going to go plan that the trip. Are you gonna go do it? No, I mean a man. I was going to go go to those places. Not plan. I just meant that I I have a list of places often because I've been planning, but I haven't go. Yeah, Cool. Did you bring your camera with you? I just I didn't think about it, but I didn't. OK, Do you have a phone that has There is an amazing to take. Great. We're on a thing called the Puget Sound. There was a park that is blocks from here. What do creators do? Quickly? Eight. Okay. Yeah, it's right there in front of you. Now I want to hear like you made a couple commitments. You set a goal area. What? Your goal. Are you really people who didn't set a go? No. No, I did. I did. But I wasn't sure if it was specific enough because find I guess what I may actually, a couple of good. Um, but one of them was in terms of was to go out at least eight. Because you can't just say I'm gonna shoot Mawr, because it's not very. It's not very new. Miracle in America today is not time bound. All these things? Yes. So I decided. But I don't even know if this is enough. But I said I would go out 89 times a month. So in this October, I'll go out and shoot 89 times amazing different dates. Put him on your calendar. It says you're a planner. Yes. Okay. I always do it. My calendars. Right. Put him on your counter, your planner. And then when you have those eight or nine days before you stop and relax when you get to number 77 and eight. Put another eight or nine on your calendar because what that done looks like to me is a have it happened, Okay, She has a habit of taking pictures, so it's like, I This is a tad pedantic, but I'm trying to illustrate how close you are to your thing, and we're all this close to our thing. There's a bunch of stories going on, but we're so close to what it is that we want to be doing. I don't even want to talk about being a pro, cause I think you'll find a way but the distance between where you are right now and actually taking. When you take photos eight or nine times a month, you go out. You know what happens. You start taking photos, and then you have things to show people. And when you're around photographers showing you rent equipment, you in the community, you reach out. You share some stuff with some other people, Instagram you end up accelerating everything. So it's not literally just the fact that you're going in taking pictures eight or nine times. There's all the mindset around it. There's all the opportunity to connect with other creators. There's the feedback that comes when you share photos that you like. It's like a catapult. Are you willing to do this? Yes. And I also Well, I also the goal that under pinned all that was wanting to post to instagram daily. What's keeping you from that? Well, the having enough content. So that's why I thought, Well, before do that, I've gotta go out. And actually, only I do act. And the truth is, I actually have a lot of content, except it's coming out. Yes, you know, keeping things because I don't have any content. And then she even like I don't have any content except I have plenty of contents. Yes, I actually do have content. Yes, I don't You just kind of like it's, you know, it's never good enough exactly. And you know what? It's never gonna be good enough. There's always a reason not to. I'm suggesting these shift gears and find a way to put it out there tomorrow. Start posting what you have between now and when you go shooting eight times, and then when you start shooting eight times, I would encourage you to post something every day. These air habits and these habits will get you. You can't not post photos every day and take photos 8 to 9 times a month and not be a photographer. There is no way that those both could be true are both Can't be true. You understand that? Yes. Let's give it up for Lisa. Thank you. Thank you so much.

I think this class is an amazing supplement to the book. It's an extension of the ideas Chase wrote about ... with conversations with amazing minds like Chris Guillebeau and Jasmine Starr and a lot of great questions from the audience. You take their thoughts and feeling and interpret them to apply to yourself and what you want to create in life. Thank you, Chase, for having me in the audience. I thoroughly enjoy learning from classes like this. Thank you so much. ~ Lifelong learner, Tris

I’m enjoying the book. I find Chase’s story inspiring and it’s great that he wants to share it and to help everyone learn to be successful at being creative. I am not looking for a career, I am looking to find creativity I seem to have lost in photography and in other hobbies. So far I am learning that I need to make a plan to get where I want to be. I know it’s still in me somewhere, I will just need to put in the work to rediscover and develop it. Interesting book and class and I just discovered the workbook tonight. I tried to watch the live class but the volume wasn’t as loud as other classes and it was difficult for me to hear on all my devices. I am going to connect my laptop to my stereo speakers to watch it soon.

Thank you for this course- I can't wait to read the book. Working through some big projects and struggling to finish the last few miles, these were all great reminders and I love the compass analogy- so true! You can tell Chase really cares about what he's teaching.
