Introduction to Craft Photography Fundamentals

Hello, and welcome to CreativeLive. My name is Kenna Klosterman and I am your host for Craft Photography Fundamentals with Candice Stringham. Now Candice Stringham is an editorial photographer. She is the marketing director of My Mind's Eye, where she creates all of the beautiful on-brand imagery that you see from My Mind's Eye. She is also one of the founders of the editorial and DIY blog called, sorry, called Handmade Mood. She is going to teach you all about how to make your images beautiful to shine your products. So please help me welcome to CreativeLive, Candice Stringham, Candice, take it away. Yeah, we didn't think about how hard Handmade Mood was to say fast when we named it, so that made things a little more complicated as things go on. I am super happy to be here today. I've been such a huge fan of CreativeLive since day one, Chase Jarvis, very first episode. And so this was like amazing to me. And especially because I'm here with my people, makers and creators and crafter...

s. That's been such a huge part of my life since the very beginning. I'm the daughter of a small creative business owner, both my parents, and my sister designs for them, and I shoot for them. So I've spent a huge part of my life helping them create low budget images with a huge impact. And it's so important as a creator to be able to do that and present your work to the world. So today's gonna be great. We're gonna talk all about that. We're gonna talk about how to create images, edit them, and then how to get them out there and brand yourself and show people who you really are and what you're creating, which is so important. So let's just get started. We are gonna start by watching this little video clip. (spirited instrumental music) Okay. So, I wanted to start out with that video because as human beings, we use visual cues to tell us what's happening around us. Whoever we're speaking to, those first impressions. When we're looking at websites online, what did the images, what is the branding, what does it look like? And so the way that we choose to present ourselves in the way that we dress, or the way that we do our hair, or the expression on our face, in real life affects how people around us feel about us. Now, I would love it if the world didn't judge us based on that, but I think we all know in general we do use those visual cues to tell us what's happening in whatever situation we're in. So that was my son. And probably that last image in his suit, he is like a competitive debater, he wins tons of awards, which is super fun to have a teenager that's good at debate. (attendees laugh) So we spend a lot of time at home arguing over rules. But that would be the best representation of him. If he dressed in one of those other ways and he came and approached you as a teen, your response to him would be very different if he was wearing a three piece button-up suit than if he was wearing that back (stammers), I can't even talk, backward baseball cap, and have that kind of chin-up attitude. So I feel like when we're looking at our branding and when we're looking at our imagery, we have to really consider the message that we wanna give to the world about who we are. And I think as small businesses, a lot of times we feel like, well, I don't have the ability or the financing or the talent to kind of make that happen. And so that's what today is all about, making that happen.

This class taught by Candice was amazing. She teaches in such a step-by-step, easy to understand pace. She shares so much of her own tips and tricks she uses to create beautiful images without spending a fortune or having all kinds of expensive equipment. Having the DSLR lessons included was really great for anyone who wants to do more than the camera phones are capable of. Learning the basics of how to use a DSLR is confusing for most people, but Candice broke it down in the simplest way possible. Social media is all about imagery, so if you want to put out the most beautiful eye-catching photos, then you want to learn how to use more than the camera phone. I don't have a business where I need to take photos of things I sell and I still enjoyed her class so much. As a photographer, I am going to use her ideas and insight when I photograph things for fun. There is so much to gain from this class. I would highly recommend taking her class. She is a wealth of great ideas and information and has that friendly personality of someone you'd want to sit and have coffee with.

A wonderful class to get you going with craft/product photography. Candice provides (and shows) fantastic examples and it's really fun to watch her work through a shoot, moving items, etc. to create the final image. She also covers some basic photography tips which is very helpful. Great class! I definitely recommend to others!

I loved this class! Candice is so personable, clear and relatable. I would want to hang out with her and be creative! I have been taking pictures for YEARS, and for my Etsy store for over two years, and I still learned a lot in her class. The lessons are set up in a way that you can follow, take what you want and don't worry about what you don't need. I will say that I got a TON of ideas for how to better display my brand, what my personal style is and how to be consistent with it. I so recommend this class for anyone who has small business or just wants to be able to take better pictures of their products. Okay, off to build a prop kit!
