Importing Back from the Archive

Now I'm going to quit this catalog and I am going to show you howto bring on archived job back in to your working catalogue so if for some reason I decided that I really actually needed this copy back into my working catalog because I was going to bring it back it's an old client we're going to resurrect the job and I'm gonna work on it for a couple months or whatever we're gonna do book or something like that they have gone on the road again and I've added to that so now it's a it's a it's a bigger job than it was before commercial could happen like that documentary stuff could happen like that so you could really kind of you know add to a job later so what you'll do is you'll go back to the archive and you'll grab it you can do two things you can either add it from the archive and just make sure that the archive is plugged in when you're working on it so in that case what you would do is you'd go oops uh light room's not open right now so I would go option click a light room click on...

my working catalog once I'm in my working catalog I can go in and go to the file menu and right up here import from another catalog so when I import from another catalog I can just point to that one in the two thousand fifteen archive drive and pull it in and then I could do stuff from it. The other option is if you don't want to keep the two thousand fifteen drive plugged in, you could also just simply coffee that over to your, uh, working drive and then you could import it from there either way's fine, so I'm an import this from another catalog I'm going to go to my two thousand fifteen drive, click on that and click on this catalog, see how I go into it and grab the catalog once I opened that it's going to import all of that stuff without moving it it's going to import it back in tow light room and now notice that I have another drive inside of more working drive, which is the archive, and if for some reason I would unplugged the archive it that green light would go away, I could still work on things on the road, so if I highlighted all of these while I was here, right, I attached the archive I want to work on these five jobs while I'm away, I can highlight all these images and just go up to the library I'm sorry that you had a library menu go to previews and go to build smart previews, click on build smart previews and as it builds those smart previews once it's done than if I detach this drive I can still work on the files when I'm on the road even though it's in the archive so you have a lot of options when it comes to how you can work on these systems but that's that's the reason I don't feel like you should keep your images for a job inside of your working dr while you're waiting on a client to come back to give you like changes for an album or something like that, you just don't need to wait there you can put it off in the archive dr if you need it again, you can bring it back and you can work on inside here and then you can get rid of it again so um so we're going to keep this here for now because we're going to want to work on some of these images as we finish out our day on dh you know, building a proof book or something like that so we're going to keep these around for now um but then as soon as we're done with them we can simply right click it, remove it and it's back on the archive and it will stay there okay all right, so, uh, any questions up to now think we have one before I have to first is do you make a copy of your archive dr a on ly the two thousand fifteen so whatever the current year is I make I have a duplicate of that one once it's a year old I have no interest in keeping track of it and if the driver died not a big deal in the portfolio dr portfolio drive always have the backup always has a backup okay okay next so I've been keeping smart previews with my jobs when I moved them into archive and it's starting you know it makes the much bigger file so can I go into those like the twenty fifteen jobs and delete those smart previews off off my archive drive without any problem should be able to write yeah just if you just highlight all of your image is go up to the library menu and go to previews you can discard the smart previews and you can also discard the one for ones and quite frankly the one for ones are much more expensive size wise than the smart previous smart creatures would like this one for one's there like that but do I have to actually open the job to do that or can I just open the folder you know where it says previews and just don't ok good eh so if you go to your you're working dr uh I'm sorry if I go to my catalogue so any catalog uh here's my working catalog any catalog that you open has several files in it so when you look at a catalogue, the two files that you see that look like this that just have like little white things and they say journal and whatnot and it says lock those are used for the protection of the file so it's riding too I don't know which one is riding too but is writing to one or the other of these it's either writing to this and it's holding these or it's writing to these and holding that but basically it's protecting your file so that there's a crash this is the auto save and it pulls it back um but thea, if you just go and grab either of these so if I shift, click both of those and delete him no big deal the only thing that matters is this one this one has all the data you throw away these the next time you open it up you just have to rebuild them. It'll just have to look at the raw data and rebuild all of those previews. Yeah, once so the oneto one's air in this one the one that says previews and then this one is the smart previous so you have smart previews and one to ones both of them can be deleted they'll just have to really rebuilt all righty well let's do it something in our collection kind of inner collection area so I want to post this job I want to be able to share this with my client and my client is my wife at home and I don't know if she's watching right now because she's busy carting kids around and doing all that kind of stuff but I'm highlighting all these images and I want to send this to the client so the first thing that I'm going to do to send in their clients I'm gonna come down to my published services remember the publisher was there just like collections but they are collections that go somewhere and my first collection that I deal with here is the smug mug collection orthe smugmug smart are you published service and in it you can see that I've got a folder called clients so see that there's a little client folder there and if I write click that client folder and say create a gallery I can also create a folder and then start creating galleries inside of it but this is only one folder I don't have like favorites and this and that so I don't need to really break it up but you can but I will create a gallery and inside that gallery this is all the information I get to choose so I can choose everything about this the first thing I'm in name it is oh you know what actually I have sorry I actually have a client folder for mike main client um and that is down here. See? There we go platform personal photos so I can click on here right click into that gallery create another gallery so now it's gonna use so if you have a client that you're constantly working for, all you have to do is give them the access to the one folder and they can get access to all their photos and every time you put something new in there it's just going to come up with same criteria okay, so now I'm going to call this jackson and I'm going to, uh let's see what we're gonna do now those of you online you're not gonna be able to see this because it's going to be password protected um but I everybody should be password protecting everything has to do with kids some um so there we go. I can put a description in there I could put keywords in there. This key words is more for less for like galleries for your clients and maura about like if you're using smugmug to be your portfolio, then you would want to put in keywords for the gallery and a description because that's going to show up on a search but I don't necessarily want people to be searching for my client's image is necessarily and so I don't worry about that, but then I also get to choose whether or not it's a gallery with full download possibilities and this one I will so if I click on this that means that my wife could buy a print or she can download the image either way it's up to her and I'm not too worried about my wife stealing my images so I don't need to put any kind of protection so I could do photo protection I can either enable it or turn it off s o this allows the original be downloaded you could also just say well let these people download a medium version or whatever so everything that you need to do is all here even including shopping and what what price points to put on it is all inside of the published service so I love a published service that doesn't require me to ever go to the service that I'm using the last thing I love smugmug the last thing I want to do is go to smugmug that's why I love them because I don't have to ever go to them so now I just simply hit create it creates a gallery in there I highlight all of my images I grab those oh they're already in there because I when I was creating it put him in there on dh now all I need to do is hit publish and now it is publishing directly to my client my client then can assumes I'm done publishing there will be a link that will show up right here that tells me the address and then I can copy that address. Goto my email, put it in the email and say here's the address for the new photos. And so those will be available to her. All right, cool. So that is the simplest way to deliver stuff to your client. Just drag it, drop it, publish it. Copy paste, send it if I want to get more tricky about it. And I want to track who's coming in and who's doing this, I could go too smug mug and I can create an event. And then I can tell the event what galleries they have access to. And then it will track who's coming in and who's doing what? And if I do that, if I if I do track an event, then if people start selecting their favorites, then I will get a different when I when I published, what will happen is I get this is really quite cool inside of my smugmug published service. I get this, uh, events see that I get events favorites if I click on that. I can see all of the events that I've been shooting. And if I click that down there's their favorites there's their favorites and they're getting delivered back to me, so now if I click here I can see alicia's favorites and john's favorites like I can see all of the different favorites here I can see you know, in the in the phoenix symphony you know I do their marketing stuff I can see all of the people at the phoenix symphony who have decided this is my favorite this is my favorite so then all they had to do was say, hey go to my favorite's folder and those are the ones we want to print or those loans want to edit that's in smugmug but it's also in the published service so if you have to do a public service and you have to put it as an event once and it's an event than it contract the people and then it'll start delivering back the favorites and as long as they're still in your gallery as long as you're still looking at him here so the job is still active you just click on there and look and they'll be there yes, just on a practical level so if if a client at an event has already chosen that they want to have something printed, you can have them requested print directly right from smuggling so you don't have to ride there on down on small money they could buy it right there so for your purposes what reason would you have tio watch which favorites they're choosing since you're not having to order president your portrait because I'll post them before I edit them remember I don't want to edit twenty five photos I want to end it two, three or four so I'll post them my clients will live with them and look at them and decide which ones they want and then they will favor them and then I can go and look at that and I don't have to go like I don't get a list and go number five number twelve I just go to it highlight those start editing them once they're done editing, then aiken repost them overwrite the old ones now they're online again now my client could go back and order prints or if I'm doing something special for him like building a book or something like that, I can use that send it off to be published a cz well, but both of us now have access to those images they can go online and print them and I could go and work on them is a book or, you know, special project or whatever I'm doing that is cool. And so so obviously you don't have to translate these two j pegs to post him to smoke while they go straight from the dmg and their joints like seven the dnc really and they're up loading is a j peg too smug mug and they deal then was a select them on on smugmug it comes back in the selection gets tagged to my d and g, right? I said I can look at the dmg because I know which one is the one they chose so then I can work on that one and say okay, I'm done and then once I'm done, I just have to take the dmg and drag it into the public service and republish it and now that edited tiff will override I'm sorry I actually was after you a completely separate question next question I was asking or noticing is that you're not having to convert these two j pegs to publish him on smugmug you're going straight from rot and they deal with the resolution all that you know the raw doesn't go up light room is making a j peg sending the j peg right deleting the j peg that's what I'm saying but you don't have to I'm not a step of making a j pick go straight from the raw, too smug mug and everything here is no internet step that's fantastic. So public services are where the time saving us everything's about public services if you could do it in a public service, do it and we're going to start publishing our block posts from our published services, so if you're connected and you've got your system down, you'll be ableto literally post from light room directly into your wordpress site so we'll show you that in the last segment of today plus we'll talk a little bit more about ceo when we do that we're also going to talk in our next segment we're going to talk about our about album design and making proof books and things like that um and we're actually gonna end our segment a little early this morning because we want to extend the next segment just a bit because there's a lot to cover we want to make proof books we want to make albums on dso that's a big task so we're going to do that in the next segment coming back but we can ask to answer some questions before we leave totally yeah how many backups of your best images do you have and in how many locations okay so my best images are on the portfolio so my portfolio has two copies has the copy that's with me all time and I keep my portfolio in a small drive I don't have it on a big drive like this I have it in a small drive because I want to be able to take that portfolio anywhere I go or leave it at home but usually if I'm traveling or if I'm lecturing I want that portfolio with me because I'm designing lectures based on that portfolio so the portfolios in a small traveling drive I keep that with me all the time but whenever I'm home it it's plugged in and I have a back up inside of my j bod system and I have a software system that looks at the two and so on a regular basis it looks at this drive the main portfolio and it looks at this drive and says what's different and it copies over anything that's different anything that's changed it copies it over to this drive this drive is separated because it's literally in a case like this and it's in a little pelican case remove the pelicans case I showed you earlier and I've got three drives there's the archive dr there's the working drive and there's the portfolio drive and then there's that little drive off to the side and that's that that's just the copy of everything on my laptop every once in a while I just back it up because it's got all sorts stuff but quite frankly the laptop is all not all that important because everything that's important accounting documents uh you know, spreadsheets all that kind of stuff is all on my dropbox I use it directly from the drop box I used my accounting documents from the drop box everything's on their quickbooks is on the drop box so that there's no chance that if this gets lost there's no chance that I'm going to be out all of those files because I just don't work on anything except from the drop box okay all right on ben o to finish answering that question so there are two physical copies that I have a portfolio but then all of my favorite images I'm uploading entire physical copies onto smugmug of all my favorite stuff and so there's another copy there that's full even though you can look at it just in normal you can upload the entire full uh file to your smug mug account also if you're a wordpress use how many of your wordpress users okay are you wordpress user on your own server or using like a wordpress actual site so like wordpress dot you dotcom okay so it is your name dot com not a word presses site okay good if and we're going to talk to the people from next gen today and I'm going to show you there published service and we're going they're they're they're what make it possible for us to literally blawg from light room them and another plug in from alley photo so with those two programmes tied together you literally khun publish your work from light room to your smug mug site but you can actually take your entire full sized image and put it on there and then they will re task all the sizes for you so you literally on your own server you could be housing all your favorite images that are going to report fall and you could be you could be killing two birds with one stone by uploading a a final image and it's also being re tasked to your portfolio so there's a lot of possibilities there. If you have your own smoke are your own wordpress sight? You could be housing big images there too if you have that kind of space up there which you probably do so three copies doing another question. Sure. Okay, khun jared, please discuss sharpening and resolution exports and he's through light room for just general usage. Um as opposed to a specific published service, for example, I need to size the same photo to three different sizes. How can I do that quickly in light room? The quickest way to export three things I have been begging adobe for a folder tree export, you know, because you couldn't do that in other programs. You can't do that light room and I've been begging for it and I hope that we'll have it on dh now, with light from c c those kind of updates khun come on a regular basis rather than waiting a year and a half for it, they could just institute it. And so hopefully we'll see that, um in the near future, I would hope but the folders in order to do that, what I would do is I would set up a folder here on the left hand side with three different sizes so that I could come in and click on one size and hit export and then come right back in so I will I would come in here click on one of my presets hit export and then soon as I hit export literally without changing anything go like this again hit the next size hit export and then do that hit that export and then all three will be going out at the same time but you won't have lost a lot of time I mean it's ridiculous that you have to do that I should be able to literally you know, shift, click all of those and then export or something like that I should be able to set up a folder tree and then just say the folder tree is going to go here and these are the sizes that I want but unfortunately we don't have that yet hopefully we will on but to answer the rest of that question, which is the file size and the sharpening and all that kind of stuff several things to think about. The first thing to think about is the size of the place that you need to go so for instance, facebook nine sixty nine, sixty pixels facebook that's what they want if you send them something bigger, they'll bring it down to that sea might as well send him that um but if you are sending two uh, smugmug full size so you don't resize anything, and then you send it up. Sharpening is a different matter if I'm sending somewhere that's going to send them for print like smugmug, if I send him smugmug and someone orders a print there taking that print and they're sending it to a white house, they're taking that image that's on smugmug and they're sending it to a white house. So why house custom colors going to print it? I am not going to sharpen it on my end because they will do whatever they need to do on their end. So I need to be aware of what's gonna happen to it if I sharpen it and then they sharpen it. It's gonna look ugly, so I'm not sharpening it. I sharpen it to what it needs to be inside the photo. So it looks good on my screen, but I'm not doing any print sharpening because I know that the person who's sharp, they're gonna be printing it is going to print it to the sharpness that they need in order to have a superior print. So I need to know about my output if I'm sending it to like costco or something like that, then I need to sharpen it because I know they're not going to they're just going to be printing whatever it is and it's gonna look kind of iffy anyway um so you got to know your final output if you're going to the web most people want to sharpen it a little bit and I agree that a little bit of sharpening on the web is a good thing but you also have to be careful about what's in your photo because if you have grain in your photo and you run prints sharpening on it the grain is going to get sharp and then it's gonna look weird it's gonna look like sandpaper so don't sharpen anything that has grain on it so typically speaking I sharpen it the way I want it to look and then I send it off without sharpening and I leave it at that the only time I do any print sharpening is when I print sharpened to someplace I control and so when we're printing to hear when we're printing to this canon printer where we are print sharpening but we're telling the print module to do the print sharpening and they were doing it very low so it's sharpening lo mat that's what I'm using and in most cases I'm always printing on matt paper or at least non glossy and so I'm always using the mat sharpening and I'm using low is generally my sharpening but I avoid grain sharpening issues some that would be my answer to that question dawson

I've been using Lightroom for about a year now. I'm pretty comfortable with the basics and a little more. Sometimes knowing what I want to learn next depends on knowing what's out there to be learned. I listened in to this course from work to get an idea of whether there was enough new content to warrant buying the course. Though Jared covers lots that I know, he filled many small things I didn't know and covered some bigger topics that were new to me. I decided that I wanted to own this course because I respond best to structured learning, and Jared starts at point A and carries through to point Z, so to speak. I have watched his live and rebroadcast courses before and I really like and learn from his teaching style too, so I'm sure this course will be the boost I need as I prepare to subscribe to Lightroom CC instead of just using my local copy. Though another reviewer's tone wasn't very nice, I have to agree that it would helpful to have a written synopsis or outline of courses to help when deciding whether to purchase. Looking at the titles of the included videos is helpful, but not enough. This would be especially useful when a person hasn't seen the live broadcast first, and is simply evaluating a course in the course library.

I learned a lot from this class when I took it a long time ago. I'm not as fond of his ego but that's fine as I don't have to be around him all day long. What I found extremely useful was the video on synching Lightroom Presets. I set this Dropbox synching system on my laptop and desktop Mac computers and it works perfectly. I also use it for other programs as well like Photoshop and another program called Keyboard Maestro. Thanks for your help Jared. Much appreciated trick.

I am new to Lightroom and from the start of the course it became very clear to me that Jared is one quality person with a real passion to explain everything with great skill and a motivation for success. I did not hesitate to download his course as this is the basis for my personal development and the journey to experience great photography.
