Quick Menu
Next up we have our multi controllers, we've talked a bit about those. Our quick menu. So the quick menu in this camera is a shortcut to a lot of the features that are in the full menu. And so when you press the Q button let's go in and talk about the quick menu. So first off the top line is just showing you the information but this is also allowing you to use the camera to change your shutter speeds and apertures. And so let me do a quick little demo here for you. Normally you're gonna have the camera held up to your eyes. I've been pressing the info button so that you can see things here on the back of the camera but if I was wanting to change to a manual, I'm gonna go to manual, just put this in manual, if I wanted to change my shutter speed well I can turn the top dial but if I go into the quick menu and I press set I'm gonna get a different graphic for looking at changing shutter speeds. And some people may like this. It tells us the advice, slow and fast, left and right, how abou...
t that? And so by hitting quick, coming over to F8, we can now see our apertures. And so it's a different type of display. Some people prefer it, some people don't. It's just a different option for you and so we're gonna see that in the quick menu. We'll see more of our options with ISO. Next line down we'll see our exposure modes as well as our exposure compensation. And then where it gets a little bit more interesting because we start getting into areas that we're gonna talk more about when we get into the menu system. But we have different picture styles, which is different looks to our jpeg images. We have our white balance setting, we've already talked about this but we can see it on the back of the camera more easily. A white balance shift where we can tweak the white balance if we're not totally happy with the settings that Cannon has for us. We can tweak it to pretty much anything we want. There is an auto lighting optimizer which is going to adjust the tones in jpeg images. And quick little example here, I just wanted to shoot it at its four different settings and in general what it does when you put in on standard and high is it lightens up the shadows. And so if you look at the shadow areas of these photographs it's a little bit lighter. And so if you do a lot of people photography this will help you a little bit with the jpeg images. It's not really anything that you can't do on your own in Photoshop, Light Room or any other post production program but it's not gonna have any impact on raw images at all. And so something you can take a look at and see if it works for your type of photography. Next up is our flash exposure compensation. We've already talked a little bit about this where we can power up or power down the flash for a more natural look. And once again features that we have talked about, the AF mode, the metering system and the drive mode are all just visible back here for changing from a different angle of view. And the custom controls, you've seen me jump into this in the menu system. This is a shortcut so that you can get in and customize the various buttons and dials on your camera a little bit more quickly. It's something I use on a fairly regular basis and can be a handy shortcut but we're gonna save the full discussion of this until we get into the menu system. And so that is the quick menu. And you can customize the quick menu in order for it to look the way that you want it to look. And this is something that we'll do, as I say in the second half of the class where we go in and you can change what items you have in there and how big they are.

I quite enjoyed John's course on the 1DX mark ii. To be frank, I should have taken it 122,000 shots ago when I bought the camera. I learned quite a bit. There were only a few occasions when I thought my cranium could explode. But I walked away from the course with some great tips and in the grand scheme of things, the money I invest in education is always more valuable than the latest and greatest camera strap, lens, or bag. It will probably take a few months for all of the information to sink in but I'm feeling good about what I learned and the price I paid for it. All in all, a good value.

John does a great job as usual. He provides so many visual aides and demonstrations which really helps you understand how to operate and set up your camera. His step by step explanation of the entire menu and each tab is excellent. In addition to his many photography tips and instructions.
