Simple Color Correction For Footage

So I have my clip, I'm feeling pretty good about this. What I'm gonna do next is I'm gonna go do a little color correction on it. So, I can come over here and click on this color tab, I was on the effects tab, but now I just wanna focus on the color of this. And I'm gonna shrink this down so you guys can see my screen a little better. It's a little cramped on here, but I think you guys can make things out. And what I'm gonna do is, on this color tab, it brings out the elementary color, and I have color correction, I have creative, I have curves, I have color wheels, the HSL; hue, saturation, luminance, and I have vignette. I'm just gonna focus just like on light room and go step by step, so I'm just gonna go to the basic color correction, and I personally think that this, I'm happy with it, I could take my eye dropper and find something white or neutral, like a neutral gray, and see how that adjusted, looks like my image got a little cooler, so, I might roll with that, but you guys kno...

w me already, I'm gonna warm it up, it's my style. So I'm gonna warm it up, and I'm actually gonna make it so that that sand's a little orange-y. Why, why? I want contrast, I want color variety. I don't want everything to be the same color temperature. So, that's too much, just a hint, a hint of yellow, so maybe somewhere in there. I could then change my exposure, so, can blow it out, so I can maybe go right here and it's like, this is so Cal, like, bright sunny day, alright but like this is Seattle. (audience laughs) I'm just kidding, I'm just kidding. Um, but, I might punch it just a little bit, so those whites are a little bit punchier. Maybe add some contrast, maybe pull down my highlights since I brought up the whites a little bit. I'm bringing back some more detail in my highlights. So, you guys, this is very similar to light room, right. You're like, oh this is similar. Very similar. I could play with my shadows, and I'm looking over there on the left hand side to see how it's affecting it. I think, I'm pretty happy with that. So, I'm gonna twirl this back so it collapses, by just clicking on it, and the next thing I'm gonna do, is I'm going to hit my creative. And, this is where I think you can have some fun. So, if you're not familiar with LUTs, look-up tables, it's basically like a filter that you can add to your video. And, Premiere has them built in, but you can also download them, you can buy them online, so you could do a google search and buy LUTs in a style that you like for maybe a content creator, who's work you really like, they may give you their LUTs, so you can kina mimic their style. But, basically what I'm gonna do, is under the creative, so, I do the basic color correction, and then I move to the next step, which is the creative step. And this is where I like, tend to have some fun, and explore, and play around, and see what happens. So, under look, I can either browse and upload a LUT that I either found, or paid for, and I can put it in here, I can load it that way, by just navigating to it, or you can check out some of your presets, that maybe you already have in there, or if you've been like me, you've downloaded things over time. So, I can go to one, and I could go exactly to the name, or what I could do, is I can just kind of go through the different options by hitting the arrow. So, I get a little preview there, and you guys can see like, that's, pretty heavy, right? So I can skip past then, like oh, that's kinda nice, the blue is a little darker, a little more washed out. Oh, my water's now got a little more emerald. That's kinda interesting. A little softer, that's interesting. Oh, really blue, right? Feels kinda like, somewhere tropical, right? So I'll just click through, got black and white, just clickin through, til something catches my eye. That's interesting, catches my eye in a bad way. Um, that's interesting. So, I just click, depending on how many you have, it could take a while. (laughs) Um, lemme show you, maybe one of the earlier ones, to show you what you could do if, like let's say you liked, let's say you like this one. What you could do, is you're like, Derek, that's kind of intense, well, you can adjust this intensity slider right here, so I can crank it all the way up, to something ridiculous, or I could crank it all the way down to something lower. So, how do I commit to this? I double click on it, and it adds it to my footage there. And you can adjust the intensity here, you guys see how it's changing in intensity? So sometimes what I might do is, I might do something that is like, really heavy, and you're like, why would you do that? But I pull it back, so I change the intensity. So, maybe what I might do like, just to show you guys this one, it's like, that's pretty heavy, but if you maybe just added a little bit, you know, it's maybe not too bad. Whoops. Right in there, and it's a little more subtle. So it just depends. I think there was one up here that I really liked though in the beginning. Kinda like this one. Okay, next what you can do, is you can add that faded look. So, all I'm doing is moving this slider, and I'm getting the faded look, that's, you know, kinda popular right now, starts to mute the overall image. Depending on what I'm shooting I might just add a little bit of a faded look to it. It just depends. And, next I can add some sharpen, gonna go back on this. That faded look was way too intense. I can add some sharpen here. If I double click it it goes back. You can add some vibrance. Double click it goes back. You can add some saturation. Double click it goes back. And, I'm going to, maybe go to, lemme get this emerald look. And, I'm gonna take my exposure down. Whoops, did I click off my thing? Dangit. And, let's say, this is looking pretty good. What you could do, is you can add some color to your shadows, you can add some color to your highlights. What you might tend to do is, like Hollywood loves to, get that blue-orange going on. So you could play with that look. If you feel comfortable with curves, maybe from, you're expert at Photoshop, you can do some coloring effects, this is all pretty advanced stuff. Again, hue saturation, this is pretty advanced. But maybe you wanna add a little vignette. You can add a vignette, you can make it a little brighter. So, maybe you wanna draw people's eye in a little bit more. I'm gonna go back to my color correction, and just maybe pull it back just a little bit.

Dirk really did a nice job taking new students thru exercises to gain confidence. The work in Lightroom and Photoshop was helpful, but I wish more time could have been focused on flying or tips. Dirk has presets that he offers. It would have been helpful to see the results using those presets. Looking forward to the free which Drone to buy class and the advanced class

I definitely recommend this course if you are thinking about getting into drone photography looking for the fundamentals. I now feel pretty confident I can get started and that my learning curve will be greatly shortened thanks to the technology available today and a great roadmap of getting started. If you are already started... follow up with his advanced topics... I know I will.

Super class. As a beginner I had little idea what to expect and never got started because of all the talk of people crashing drones right and left and losing a fortune. Dallas made it seem simple. So I bought a Tello beginners drone (great starter by the way), got hooked and am now flying a DJI Mavic Pro 2 and studying for a commercial license. Not sure, this is a great class to start with.
