Using the Power of White Space

So let's talk about white space who here uses white space a lot? Yeah, I am not a huge white space crapper I'm really not, but I do use it sometimes, especially when it's somebody else's template get so what? Who knows the definition of white space? What is white space? Is it like the negative space? It is? The negative space on the exact definition is it's referred to his negative space and it's the portion of the page just left unmarked. So the portion of the page where there's nothing it's, not a blank space, it's an important element of design that uses negative space to draw attention to where you want the viewers I'd be so I know that we've been talking about amusing a lot of visual wait to draw the viewers I am, but you can also use no visual wait to draw the viewer zion as well. It alternately gives your eye somewhere to look at and somewhere to rest, which is could be very important, especially when you do scrapbooking like me and you have a lot going on. So the key to white s...

pace layout is to make sure that your design has enough going on even though we're using white space that it doesn't look like you stopped in the middle of your loud you like I'm done, I think it's good and it still has to have visual ways has to follow rules, it still has to have some stuff going on so let's talk about some misconceptions of white space whitespace lay out the number one misconception is that it doesn't have to be done on white paper, it doesn't. The white space isn't referring to the color it's referring to the negative space so you don't even have to use a solid paper army. Yes, on paper you can use pattern paper and still have a white space layout. This one obviously has a great paper and I didn't even make the paper go all the way to the edge. Totally out I used the stack background technique and it's still a white space layout um number two misconception whitespace layouts cannot be embellished their one little tiny pictured on the bottom of the corner with a flower and you're good no, they can have embellishments, they could be crazy, they can be loud, they could have a lot of color, this is definitely crazy, I am not kidding, he did that all on his own. We gave a chainsaw for his birthday, he asked for it, he asked for a chainsaw for his birthday, and then as soon as he opened it, he stood up on the counter and said, I'm crazy and I have a chainsaw yeah, so I wanted to match the mood and that's what we did and it's still a white space play out. I didn't have to go super crazy with the layout because I really wanted to focus on the back that he that this picture is ridiculous it's insane. So let's talk about another misconception that white space layouts um have to like I said have a small cluster in the bottom they can't spanned the page absolutely untrue they can have a lot of color they can have, they can spend the entire space reward spanned the entire page. We've already looked at this layout, but let's, look at it at it again! It has embellishment, it has lots of papers, it has a photo and journaling and it has a title and it doesn't it's not tiny and it's not down in the corner and it's not the whole page isn't black and with a little tiny photo, you don't have to do it that way. You can totally utilize white space in a way that still incorporates a lot of design and color and then finally that white space layouts cannot have a lot going on they the misconception is that it just has tio has to have a ton of white space no, the on this layout especially you can see that there's a lot going on um but there is also a lot of space in between for your I'd arrest and that's. What makes it okay for there to be a lot going on? Because I'm giving the eye somewhere to rest in between all of this embellishment. It works so you can use white space here. Advantage, um, and still cluster. Still use a lot of color. Still, use more than one photo. You don't have tio limit yourself just because the dreaded white space says you have to use a big white background in one little picture know, have fun with white space.

I have recently discovered digital scrapbooking and have been using a great scrapbooking software that I downloaded on-line. There are limitations with the software that prompted me to look deeper for ideas. Traci's course was fantastic! I learned so much from her not only in scrapbooking layouts and using different elements in a page but my level of understanding of photoshop has improved dramatically. The presentation was easy to follow and broken into perfect chunks to go back and review the techniques. Thank you so much Traci for presenting this awesome course. I will look for more of your courses. Your scrapbooking is beautiful and inspiring!

I'm a photographer. I do a lot of graphic design for my business. I feel like I'm fairly knowledgeable. I saw this class being shown for free on Creative Live one day and it wasn't my first choice to watch, but was the best out of the list... I was wrong. This is a great class. I didn't expect to learn that much and I've been learning a lot! Great info!
